POINTER NOTES

Seven UW-Stevens Point Athletes Named Conference Athletes of the Week

UW-Stevens Point had an impressive week in athletics as six athletes were named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week and another was named the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Athlete of the Week. The honors cap off a week in which the Pointers went a combined 11-0 in head-to-head competition.

Receiving the honor for the second time this year and for the third time in his career was mens basketball player Jason Kalsow. Meanwhile, Cassandra Schultz received the honor in womens basketball for the second time in her career. The Pointers also swept Athlete of the Week honors in hockey as Ryan Kirchhoff won the award for the men and Jackie Schmitt (NCHA) did the same for the womens team. In mens swimming Alex Anderson continued an impressive year receiving Athlete of the Week honors for the fourth time and Chad Pettis earned his second mens diving honor. Meghan Walsh took home the award in womens swimming.

Kalsow, a senior from Huntley, Ill., scored a career high 31 points in a victory over UW-Eau Claire. Kalsow made 11 of 15 shots, including three of five from three-point range, while also dishing out seven assists and grabbing five rebounds. Kalsow now has 1,641 career points and is just eight points shy of matching Tim Naegelis school scoring record.

Schultz, a junior from Hartford, became the third womens basketball player in five weeks to receive Athlete of the Week honors. Schultz scored half of her teams points in a 62-55 victory over UW-Eau Claire. Schultz made all five of her three-point attempts and finished with a career high 31 points.

Kirchhoff, a senior from Fairway, Kan., scored two goals, including the game-winner, and added three assists as the Pointers defeated third-ranked UW-Superior 7-5. A night earlier against St. Scholastica, Kirchhoff assisted Mike Brolsma on his game-winner in a 4-2 victory.

Schmitt, a senior from Buffalo Grove, Ill., is the fifth womens hockey player in the past eight weeks to receive Athlete of the Week honors. Schmitt scored two goals in two Pointer victories over the weekend as the team claimed their second NCHA regular season title.

Anderson, a junior from La Crosse Central, received the honor for the eighth time is his career and is the sixth mens swimmer in nine weeks to earn the honor. Anderson earned a new pool record and a pair of NCAA championship qualifying B-cut times in the Pointers dual meet victory at Gustavus Adolphus. Anderson broke a pool record in the 200-yard breaststroke winning in 2:08.82 and also provisionally qualified for the NCAAs in the 50-yard freestyle.

Pettis, a junior from Eau Claire Memorial, recorded two victories in the dual meet with Gustavus Adolphus. Pettis won the one-meter event with a score of 270.90 and then took the three-meter dive with a score of 242.40.

Walsh, a sophomore from Austin, Minn., set two pool records and won three events in the dual meet at Gustavus Adolphus. Walsh broke the pool record in both the 100 and 200-yard butterfly events, turning in times of 59.26 and 2:12.31 respectively. She also won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:15.75.
