Schmitt Named WIAC Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

UW-Stevens Point senior soccer player Tara Schmitt picked the perfect time to score her second career goal, recording an overtime game-winner to give the Pointers a 2-1 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.) in the title match of the Rochester, N.Y. tournament.

Schmitt also cleared a shot that would have put RIT ahead 2-0 in the second half and was named the tournaments Most Valuable Player as well as the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

A Brookfield native and Waukesha Catholic Memorial High School graduate, Schmitt is a three-time All-WIAC defender and scored her only previous goal in a 12-0 win over UW-Superior as a sophomore. She was also the starting point guard in womens basketball for the Pointers the past four years and now has a 153-26-5 career record in both sports.

Football Ranked Sixth in Latest National Poll

UW-Stevens Point moved up three spots in the latest NCAA Division III rankings and checks in at No. 6 in this weeks poll by D3football.com. The Pointers play their season opener on Saturday at home against Tri-State University at 1 p.m. at Goerke Field.

UW-Stevens Points opponent next week, Linfield (Ore.), is ranked second in the country and UW-La Crosse is ranked third. UW-Eau Claire is ranked 17th after beating defending national champion St. Johns (Minn.) last week.

Sports Illustrated Gives High Praise to Pointer Home Football Schedule

According to Sports Illustrateds college football preview, UW-Stevens Point may have the most attractive home schedule in the NCAA Division III this season as the top two teams in the country will both play at Goerke Field in the first four weeks.

The magazines top-ranked team is UW-La Crosse, while Linfield (Ore.) is ranked No. 2. Both squads will play at Goerke Field this season as UW-La Crosse visits on Oct. 2 and Linfield plays in Stevens Point on Sept. 18. UW-Stevens Point was not ranked in the publications top 10.
