Bakken Selected to Aztec Bowl Division III Football All-Star Game

UW-Stevens Point will be represented in the Aztec Bowl Division III football all-star game for the fourth straight year as senior defensive lineman Clint Bakken has been named to the 42-member squad that will play on Dec. 11 in Cancun, Mexico.

Bakken, a Boulder Junction native who attended Minocqua Lakeland High School, will compete for the United States team in a game against the Mexican National Team. The game is sponsored by the American Football Coaches Association and is in its eighth year featuring Division III players. Former Central (Iowa) coach Ron Schipper will coach the team.

Bakken is the sixth UW-Stevens Point player to participate in the game in the past seven years. The others were quarterback Scott Krause in 2003, defensive back Dillon Maney in 2002, defensive end Paul Schmitt in 2001, defensive lineman Mark Fetzer in 1999 and linebacker Clint Kriewaldt in 1998.

Bakken was an all-conference selection the past two seasons and a unanimous choice as a junior. He racked up 49 tackles, including five tackles for loss. Bakken was a dominating presence on the defensive line, especially late in the season when he totaled 12 tackles against UW-River Falls and nine against UW-Stout.

LaClair Named NCHA Womens Hockey Player of the Week

UW-Stevens Point womens hockey goaltender Julie LaClair had one of the most perfect debuts of any collegiate athlete.

Playing in her first collegiate game last week against St. Catherine, LaClair stopped all 18 shots she faced to earn the shutout in a 7-0 blanking of the Wildcats.

For her performance, the White Bear Lake, Minn. native was named the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Player of the Week.

LaClair and the Pointers defense have not allowed an even strength goal over the first four games, while opening the season 4-0. UW-Stevens Point is ranked fourth in the latest NCAA Division III poll.
