The Pointers swept a four-game series from UW-Superior to remain in third place in the WIAC. UW-Stevens Point plays six games this week, including a four-game series at conference leader UW-Whitewater this weekend.

UW-Stevens Point beat the Yellowjackets 4-0 and 5-4 on Saturday before erupting on Sunday for 20-3 and 21-4 victories.

Senior Matt Peetz (Spring Green, WI) had another big weekend, reaching base 14 of 17 times. He was seven-for-10 with seven walks and seven RBI�s. Peetz is hitting .529 for the season with a .625 on-base percentage, including a 19-game hitting streak.

Jake Frombach (Stratford, WI) has also been swinging a hot bat and was 10-for-18 for the weekend while extending his hitting streak to 10 games. Joe Waksmonski (Schofield, WI) was four-for-four with five RBI�s in Sunday�s first game and hit for the cycle. Matt Peterson (Plymouth, WI) was three-for-three with two home runs in the second game.

Shane Standifer (Princeton, WI) had his first career complete game with a career-high nine strikeouts in the shutout win on Saturday. J.C. Reinke (Bonduel, WI) also had a complete game in Sunday�s opener with 11 strikeouts.

 

SOFTBALL (16-19 overall, 5-9 WIAC)

The Pointers won three of five games last week and prepare for the conference tournament this weekend in River Falls with an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III tournament at stake.

UW-Stevens Point swept Lakeland 4-0 and 7-6 on Tuesday as Stephanie Anderson (Milwaukee, WI) pitched a complete game shutout in the opener and Jenni Van Cuyk (Kimberly, WI) was three-for-six for the day. Rebekah Bauer (Stevens Point, WI) had triples in each game.

The Pointers won one of three games on Saturday in the WIAC cluster in La Crosse. After losing to UW-Superior 6-0, they beat UW-Stout 7-5 before losing to UW-Eau Claire 2-0.

Van Cuyk was three-for-four and Bauer drove in four runs for the victory over UW-Stout as the Pointers clinched at least the seventh seed for the WIAC tournament. Sunday�s games in La Crosse were postponed to Monday and the Pointers could move into the sixth seed with a pair of victories.

UW-Stevens Point will also play its final home games of the year on Wednesday when it hosts MSOE in a 6 p.m. doubleheader at Zenoff Park.

 

TRACK AND FIELD

UW-Stevens Point split its team around three different meets over the weekend with participants at the Drake Relays, UW-La Crosse and Loras.

Curt Johnson (DeForest, WI) automatically qualified for the NCAA Division III outdoor championships in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 30:11.48 to finish third in the event. The women�s team had an impressive performance in the distance medley relay as the team of Leah Herlache (Green Bay, WI), Marie Burrows (Menomonee Falls, WI), Jenna Mitchler (Kaukauna, WI) and Megan Craig (Bangor, WI) placed second in a field of mostly Division II schools with a time of 11:54.37. The women�s 4x800 relay of Mitchler, Herlache, Craig and Kayla Brinker (Baraboo, WI) was sixth in 9:13.17.

At the Loras Invite, James Levash (Brillion, WI) provisionally qualified in the 10,000 meters by finishing second in 31:26.91. Brad Wick (Elk River, MN) was second in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:46.15 and Ryan Shepard (Cornell, WI) was second in the high jump with a leap of six feet, five inches.

In La Crosse, the Pointer women placed fourth of eight teams. Julia Slabosheski (Princeton, WI) automatically qualified for nationals in the discus with a throw of 160 feet, two inches. Melissa Seefeldt (Valders, WI) had a provisional throw in the hammer throw, finishing second at 158 feet, 10 inches. Ashleigh Potuznik (Baraboo, WI) won the 5000-meter run in 18:04. Nicole Pooley (Fennimore, WI) was second in the high jump at five feet, 1.75 inches. Becky Clarke (Antioch, IL) was third in the long jump, fourth in the javelin and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles.

This week, both the men�s and women�s teams will compete on Friday at the UW-La Crosse Classic.
