The Pointers bring a
seven-game winning streak into the week and play eight games, including a
key home doubleheader against UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday. UW-Stevens Point also
hosts Lakeland on Monday and plays a four-game weekend series at UW-Stout.
The Pointers are coming off a
four-game sweep of UW-La Crosse, winning 12-2 and 9-6 on Thursday before
pulling out 4-3 and 13-12 wins on Friday. UW-Stevens Point is now 5-1 in the
league, while UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater are both 9-1.
Matt Peetz (Spring Green, WI)
continued his hot start with eight hits in 15 at-bats and seven RBI�s during
the four games at UW-La Crosse. He is now hitting .500 for the season. Chuck
Brehm (Spencer, WI) was eight-for-17 with a triple and two home runs for the
weekend.
Aaron Achterberg (Eau Claire,
WI) and J.C. Reinke (Bonduel, WI) both posted victories as starters on
Thursday, while Kevin Pankow (Oconomowoc, WI) picked up a pair of wins in
relief on Friday. Greg Treml (Stevens Point, WI) drove in the winning run in
the bottom of the eighth inning in the 4-3 win and Mike Hall (Manitowoc, WI)
had the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth inning for the 13-12
victory.

After playing 10 games last
week, the Pointers get set for nine more this week with home doubleheaders
set for Tuesday against UW-Oshkosh and Thursday against St. Norbert. The
Pointers also play five games on Saturday and Sunday at the WIAC Cluster in
Platteville.
UW-Stevens Point went 5-5 last
week, opening the week on Monday with a doubleheader sweep of defending WIAC
champion UW-Platteville 1-0 and 8-0. The Pointers dropped two games the
following day at UW-Whitewater by 4-3 scores with the second game taking
eight innings. UW-Stevens Point swept Northland 5-1 and 1-0 on Wednesday and
beat the Lumberjills 8-0 for its only win at the UW-Eau Claire tournament.
The Pointers lost to St. Scholastica 2-1, Viterbo 6-4 and UW-Eau Claire 6-2
to finish 1-3 at the tournament. St. Scholastica and Viterbo both scored two
runs in the seventh inning to pull out the close victories.
Mandy Jellish (Kaukauna, WI)
had a solid week for the Pointers, hitting .424 with 14 hits in 33 at-bats.
Jenni Van Cuyk (Kimberly, WI) hit .393 (11-for-28) and Rebekah Bauer
(Stevens Point, WI) hit .367 (11-for-30) with six extra-base hits for the
week.
Stephanie Anderson (Milwaukee,
WI) had two shutouts for the week and finished with 26 strikeouts in 28 and
one-third innings pitched. Kelly Schmidt (Wrightstown, WI) also had two wins
and Amanda Maule (Tomahawk, WI) posted a win as well as six strong innings
in the second game at UW-Whitewater.
TRACK AND FIELD

The UW-Stevens Point men�s
team rolled to an easy victory in the Coldman Invitational on Saturday,
while the women�s team finished second behind UW-Oshkosh.
The men�s team had 294 points
and UW-Oshkosh was second with 199.5. The Pointer women�s team had 224.5
points, while the Titans had 268.5 points to win the meet.
Kent Hutchison (Green Bay,
WI) and Andrew Schliepp (Redgranite, WI) each won two events for the men�s
team. Hutchison won the long jump at 21 feet, 8.75 inches and the javelin at
151 feet, six inches. Schliepp captured the 110-meter hurdles at 14.99
seconds and the 400-meter hurdles at 55.87 seconds.
Josh VanderVelden (Kimberly,
WI) won the shot put at 49 feet, 1.75 inches and Mark Wierzba (Rosholt, WI)
claimed the hammer throw at 184 feet. Other winners were Marcus VerDuin (Howards
Grove, WI) in the 100-meter dash in 11.17 seconds, Matt Legel (Crystal Lake,
IL) in the 400-meter dash at 49.83 seconds, Rick Pavlat (Wild Rose, WI) in
the 800-meter run at 2:00.33 and Mark LaLonde (Park Falls, WI) in the
1500-meter run at 4:04.52. The 4x100-meter relay also won in 43.79 seconds
and the 4x400-meter relay won in 3:28.61.
On the women�s side, Megan
Craig (Bangor, WI) won the 800-meter run in 2:23.09, Jenna Mitchler
(Kaukauna, WI) won the 5000-meter run in 17:56.38 and Ashley Earney
(Cochrane, WI) captured the 10,000-meter run in 41:02.50. In field events,
Nicole Pooley (Fennimore, WI) won the high jump at five feet, 2.5 inches and
Becky Clarke (Antioch, IL) took the javelin with a throw of 119 feet, five
inches.
The Pointers will compete
this weekend at the Augustana Invitational in Rock Island, Ill.
