BASEBALL (5-5 overall, 1-1 WIAC)

The Pointers split a doubleheader with WIAC favorite UW-Oshkosh and then swept two games from St. Norbert to finish 3-1 for the week. UW-Stevens Point has a big week ahead with four games at conference rival UW-La Crosse.

UW-Stevens Point was held to two hits in a 4-0 loss to UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday, but Aaron Achterberg (Eau Claire, WI) sparked a 6-4 win in the second game by holding the Titans to no runs and three hits over the final five innings. Matt Peetz (Spring Green, WI) delivered three hits, including the go-ahead single to break a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning.

On Sunday, the Pointers slugged nine home runs to beat St. Norbert 17-6 and 8-7. UW-Stevens Point hit six homers in the first game and jumped out to a 13-0 lead after two innings. Every starter had at least two hits with Greg Treml (Stevens Point, WI) leading the way at four-for-four with two home runs. Jake Frombach (Stratford, WI) was three-for-four with a homer.

The Pointers trailed 6-0 in the fifth inning of the second game, but freshman Chuck Brehm (Spencer, WI) singlehandedly led the comeback, hitting two-run homers in the fifth and sixth innings and then finishing the rally with a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to finish three-for-six with six RBI�s. Mike Hall (Manitowoc, WI) also homered for the Pointers and Matt Peterson (Plymouth, WI) had three hits.

The Pointers have a busy week ahead with 10 games scheduled over the next six days. UW-Stevens Point plays its home opener on Monday against UW-Platteville at Zenoff Park and then has doubleheaders on Tuesday and Wednesday before taking part in the UW-Eau Claire tournament over the weekend.

The Pointers won their only two games last week, sweeping a doubleheader from Edgewood by 9-1 and 7-2 scores. Mandy Jellish (Kaukauna, WI), Lynsi Loewenhagen (Appleton, WI) and Jessica Cook (Reedsburg, WI) all had two hits for UW-Stevens Point. Stephanie Anderson (Milwaukee, WI) allowed no runs and two hits over five innings for the victory.

In the second game, Rebekah Bauer (Stevens Point, WI), Liz Boettcher (New Berlin, WI) and Jenni Van Cuyk (Kimberly, WI) all had two hits and Alysia Klawitter (Auburndale, WI) retired all nine batters faced for the save in relief of Kelly Schmidt (Wrightstown, WI).

 

TRACK AND FIELD

The Pointers compete in their only home outdoor meet of the year on Saturday when they host the annual Coldman Invitational. The meet begins with field events at 10:30 a.m. and running events at 11 a.m.

Last weekend, the Pointer men�s team won the North Central Invitational by edging UW-Oshkosh by just four points. The UW-Stevens Point women�s team placed third of four teams, placing behind UW-La Crosse and UW-Oshkosh.

Kent Hutchinson (Green Bay, WI) won two events for the Pointers, taking the long jump in 22 feet, 4.25 inches and the javelin in 162 feet, two inches. Mark Wierzba (Rosholt, WI) had an NCAA provisional throw in the hammer throw at 179 feet, 5.5 inches.

Other running event winners were Marcus VerDuin (Howards Grove, WI) in the 100-meter dash at 11.04 seconds, Matt Legel (Crystal Lake, IL) in the 800-meter dash at 1:55.80, Mark LaLonde (Park Falls, WI) in the 5000-meter run at 15:10.96 and Jake Rhyner (Medford, WI) in the 3000-meter steeplechase at 9:52.70. The 1600-meter relay team won in 3:29.50 and Peter Prusinski (Rib Lake, WI) won the shot put in 49 feet, one inch. Andrew Schliepp (Redgranite, WI) was second in both hurdle events and had a provisional time in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.65 seconds.

The women had two individual champions as Becky Clarke (Antioch, IL) had an NCAA provisional qualifying throw in the javelin at 131 feet, 7.5 inches and Jenna Mitchler (Kaukauna, WI) won the 1500-meter run in 4:56.60.
