POINTER SPORTS RALLY SET FOR
WEDNESDAY
Fans of UW-Stevens Point
athletic teams will have the chance to show their support for the Pointers
in the midst of one of the school�s most successful sports seasons ever on
Wed., March 31 at 6 p.m. during a rally in Berg Gym.
Athletes and coaches from the
entire athletic department will be present, giving fans the opportunity to
show support and meet their favorite Pointers. A ceremony featuring campus
and community leaders as well as Pointer athletes and coaches will last
about one hour. Athletes and coaches will remain in the gym to meet fans and
sign autographs following the ceremony.
UW-Stevens Point has earned
six top four national finishes already this year and all six trophies will
be on display. The Pointers have had eight sports place in the top 10
nationally through the winter sports season, headlined by a national
championship in men�s basketball and runner-up finishes in women�s hockey
and men�s cross country.
UW-STEVENS POINT RANKS SECOND IN
USSA DIRECTOR�S CUP
Coming off an exceptional run of
winter sports success, UW-Stevens Point sits in second place in the United
States Sports Academy Directors� Cup Standings, which measure the top
overall athletic department in the NCAA Division III.
The standings, formerly known as
the Sears Cup, include points accumulated in NCAA tournament competition.
UW-Stevens Point had a national championship in men�s basketball, a third
place finish in women�s indoor track and field, a fourth place finish in
women�s basketball and a sixth place finish in men�s indoor track and field.
The Pointers also were ninth in wrestling, 13th in men�s swimming and diving
and 35th in women�s swimming and diving. The runner-up finish in women�s ice
hockey is not included in the standings since a sport must have a minimum of
12 teams in its tournament to qualify.
With all
of the success, UW-Stevens Point amassed 505 points in winter sports and now
has a school-record 730 points. The most points UW-Stevens Point previously
had a in a full year was 656.5 in 2001-02 when it finished sixth in the
final standings.
Williams
(Mass.), which lost to the
Pointers in the men�s basketball title game, leads the standings with 821.25
points and could clinch its eighth title in the nine-year history of the
award. The College of New Jersey is in third place with 623.75 points.

UW-Stevens Point opened its
season with a 2-4 record in games played in Nashville, Tenn. and
Bloomington, Ill. The Pointers lost to Division I Austin Peay 7-1 before
splitting with Lipscomb (Tenn.), posting an 8-0 win and suffering a 5-1
loss. Over the weekend, the Pointers beat Loras 6-5 in eight innings and
lost to Illinois Wesleyan 4-2 and St. Olaf 14-11.
Senior Ryan Jones (Eau Claire,
WI) hit five home runs in the six games, giving him the school�s all-time
record with 33 for his career. He was nine-for-21 for the week with eight
RBI�s.
Matt Peetz (Spring Green, WI) was
eight-for-16 for the week and freshman Chuck Brehm (Park Falls, WI) was
seven-for-14. Against Loras, the Pointers scored two runs in the bottom of
the eighth as Matt Polomis (Wausaukee, WI) homered and Jake Frombach
(Stratford, WI) hit a game-winning sacrifice fly.
UW-Stevens Point opens conference
play on Wednesday with two games at UW-Oshkosh before hosting St. Norbert on
Sunday.
SOFTBALL (3-6 overall, 0-0 WIAC)

The Pointers finished 3-6 on
their spring break trip and continue their non-conference schedule this week
with a doubleheader on Thursday at Edgewood.
UW-Stevens Point swept Blackburn
8-2 and 7-6 to open the trip, while also posting a 6-2 win over Cornell
(Iowa) with six runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Pointers were
swept by Washington (Mo.) 8-0 and 3-2, while also taking losses to Upper
Iowa 5-0, Northwestern (Iowa) 2-1, Coe 5-3 and William Penn 8-0.
Jackie Berger (Bonduel, WI) led
the team with a .375 average, finishing the trip six-for-16. Rebekah Bauer
(Stevens Point, WI) had five of the team�s eight extra base hits, posting
four doubles and a home run to finish seven-for-27 with six RBI�s.
Stephanie Anderson (Milwaukee,
WI) had two pitching victories and had a 2.37 ERA for the week.

The outdoor season gets underway
for the Pointers this weekend as they take part in the North Central
Invitational in Naperville, Ill.
Julia Slabosheski (Princeton, WI)
competed individually at the Wartburg Invitational over the weekend and won
the discus throw with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 139 feet, one
inch.
