Softball Continues Trend By Splitting Games in Florida

For the fourth consecutive day, the UW-Stevens Point softball team split a pair of games on its spring break trip to Fort Myers, Fla. as the Pointers lost to Buffalo State (N.Y.) 21-6 and then defeated Endicott (Mass.) 3-0 on Thursday.

The opening game was a wild affair as the teams combined for 29 hits and 18 errors. UW-Stevens Point was charged with 11 errors and Buffalo State totaled 19 hits as the Bengals hit four home runs and scored four runs in each of the first four innings before tallying five in the fifth.

UW-Stevens Point was led by Meagan Strmsek, who was two-for-three with two RBI's. Katie Knoedler took the loss.

The second game was a completely different story as the Pointers had no errors and Karen Guckenberger threw a two-hit shutout. The senior pitcher retired the first 10 batters and allowed only singles in the fourth and fifth innings while finishing with nine strikeouts.

UW-Stevens Point took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a run-scoring double by Jenni Van Cuyk and Strmsek gave the Pointers a two-run lead with an RBI double in the third inning. Liz Boettcher led off the seventh with a single and scored on a two-out error to finish the scoring. Jill Van Wychen was two-for-four for the Pointers, who will play three games on Friday to wrap up their trip.
