Softball Team Splits Games to Open Florida Trip

Brooke Woller went three-for-three with a grand slam and five RBIs as the UW-Stevens Point softball team pounded out 17 hits in a season-opening 15-7 win over Pine Manor (Mass.) Sunday in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Pointers totaled eight hits in their second game of the day, but only managed one run in a 2-1 loss to Division II North Dakota.

UW-Stevens Point trailed 5-0 in the third inning against Pine Manor before scoring six runs in the third inning. Jill Van Wychen added three hits for the Pointers, while Amy Schumacher, Carrie Hermsen and Meagan Strmsek each had two hits.

Erin Penza earned the victory in her first collegiate appearance, allowing two runs in two and two-thirds innings of relief of starter Katie Knoedler.

The Pointers took a 1-0 lead against North Dakota before the Fighting Sioux scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the victory. Karen Guckenberger allowed just four hits and struck out six while taking the loss for the Pointers.

Schumacher and Jenny Feidt each had two hits for UW-Stevens Point, which plays Massachusetts foes Wheaton and Worcester State on Monday.
