UW-Stevens Point had its season end in the WIAC tournament in Whitewater over the weekend with a pair of losses to UW-Oshkosh. The Pointers lost to the Titans 8-5 in the opening game of the tournament and then rebounded to beat UW-La Crosse 9-5 on Friday before losing again to UW-Oshkosh 7-5 on Saturday. It marked the first time since 1996 that the Pointers did not reach the WIAC tournament championship game.

In both games against UW-Oshkosh, the Pointers fell behind early before scoring the final five runs of each game. Mike Hall (Manitowoc, WI), Kevin Fry (Helenville, WI) and Matt Peterson (Plymouth, WI) all homered to spark the attempted comeback in the first loss to the Titans.

Against UW-La Crosse, senior Jeff Pieper (Wausau, WI) pitched seven strong innings to pick up the victory and finish his career with a 23-6 record, marking the highest career winning percentage of any pitcher in school history at .793. Joe Waksmonski (Schofield, WI) was three-for-three in the win.

Kevin Pankow (Oconomowoc, WI) allowed just two hits over five innings of relief to give the Pointers a chance to rally against UW-Oshkosh on Saturday. UW-Stevens Point battled back and had the tying run at the plate in the ninth, but couldnt finish the comeback and ends the year with a 26-14-1 record.

UW-Whitewater beat UW-Oshkosh 12-1 in the title game, though both teams received bids to the NCAA Division III tournament.
