The Pointers enter their final week of the regular season coming off a tough week that saw them win two of eight road games. UW-Stevens Point had its 20-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday when it lost at UW-Whitewater 5-2 and 10-1. On Thursday, the Pointers beat St. Norbert 22-5, but lost the second game 10-4. Over the weekend, UW-Stevens Point beat UW-La Crosse 7-2 in the second game of a four-game series. The Pointers lost the other three games 5-0, 8-3 and 13-10.

This week, the Pointers play a doubleheader at UW-Platteville on Wednesday before returning home to face WIAC leader UW-Oshkosh in a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday. The Pointers have won 22 straight home games entering the weekend series.

Senior Eric Schlender (Baraboo, WI) allowed just four hits over seven innings to post the win over UW-La Crosse and improve to 5-0 for the season with a 1.37 ERA. Junior Jeremy Mueller (Waukesha, WI) earned the win over St. Norbert and Mike Hall (Manitowoc, WI) went five-for-six at the plate in the victory.

SOFTBALL (21-15 overall, 7-9 WIAC)

Senior centerfielder Jill Van Wychen (Kaukauna, WI) continued her amazing season with hits in all nine of the Pointers games last week to set the NCAA Division III record for longest hitting streak at 36 games. Van Wychen exceeded the old record of 33 games by Angie Adams of Adrian (Mich.) in 1997 and 1998. Van Wychen has a hit in every game this season and leads the WIAC with a .488 average.

The team didnt fare as well this weekend with one win in five games at the WIAC cluster. The Pointers opened the weekend with a 4-3 win over UW-Superior, but lost to UW-La Crosse 6-5, UW-River Falls 8-6, UW-Eau Claire 12-0 and UW-Stout 5-4.

UW-Stevens Point dropped to the sixth seed in this weekends conference tournament in Platteville. The Pointers will take on third-seeded UW-River Falls in the opening round on Friday at 11 a.m. Other games have second-seeded UW-La Crosse taking on seventh-seeded UW-Whitewater, fourth-seeded UW-Eau Claire meeting fifth-seeded UW-Stout and eighth-seeded UW-Oshkosh facing ninth-seeded UW-Superior. Top seed UW-Platteville has a first round bye. Defending champion UW-Superior won the tournament as the sixth seed last year and UW-Stevens Point won as the seventh seed in 2001.

Earlier in the week, the Pointers split a doubleheader with Lakeland, winning 8-0 and losing 8-4. They also swept two games from Northland, winning 5-0 and 3-1.

For the first time since 1995, UW-Stevens Point will host the WIAC outdoor track and field championships at Colman Field. The men's 4x800 relay team of Matt Legel (Crystal Lake, IL), Steve Gillespie (Green Lake, WI), Adam Bucholz (Thiensville, WI) and Jesse Baumann (Verona, WI) also had a strong performance with a fourth place finish in 7:35.83. Legel, Gillespie and Baumann teamed with Matt Buska (Mosinee, WI) to place sixth in the distance medley relay in 10:02.63.

The women's top effort came from the distance medley relay of Leah Herlache (Green Bay, WI), Kim Klosno (Stevens Point, WI), Jenna Mitchler (Kaukauna, WI) and Megan Craig (Bangor, WI), finishing fourth in 12:08.56.

Also, the Pointer women's track and field team placed third at the UW-La Crosse Invitational despite having just three event winners.
