UW-Stevens Point powered its way to its third WIAC championship in four seasons by scoring 84 runs and hitting 24 home runs last week while posting a 7-1 record.

The Pointers will host this weekend�s WIAC tournament for the first time since 1997 and will open play Friday at noon against UW-Oshkosh at University Field. UW-Whitewater and UW-La Crosse meet in the other first round game at the same time at Bukolt Park. The Pointers wrap up their regular season with a pair of non-conference games Tuesday at Marian.

UW-Stevens Point opened the week with a 9-8 win over UW-Stout in 10 innings and a 14-6 win over UW-Stout. The Pointers then swept UW-Oshkosh 8-0 and 10-2 before taking three of four games from UW-Whitewater over the weekend.

The Pointers hit seven home runs in a 20-4 rout of the Warhawks in the opening game, which featured a school-record tying 14 runs in the seventh inning. UW-Stevens Point rallied in the second game after trailing 5-4 in the eighth, but Ryan Ivy (Kenosha, WI) and Joe Waksmonski (Schofield, WI) both hit home runs in the eighth inning as the Pointers came back for a 7-5 win.

On Sunday, UW-Stevens Point took an 8-5 lead into the ninth after Matt Peterson (Plymouth, WI) hit a seventh inning grand slam, however, the Warhawks scored four times in the final inning for a 9-8 win.

The Pointers trailed 4-0 in the decisive fourth game, but Matt Peetz (Spring Green, WI) hit a three-run homer and Kevin Pankow (Oconomowoc, WI) provided 3 1/3 innings of strong relief for the win. Josh Blaha (Two Rivers, WI) worked out of jams in the eighth and ninth innings for the save.

Senior Randy Reed (Appleton, WI) hit .462 for the week (18-for-39) with six doubles, two triples and four home runs.

SOFTBALL (21-12 overall, 7-4 WIAC)

Season complete

The Pointers had their season come to an end Saturday in the WIAC tournament, falling 2-1 to UW-Whitewater. UW-Stevens Point ended the year 21-12, marking its ninth consecutive 20-win season.

The Pointers opened the tournament with a 3-1 loss to UW-Stout in eight innings, but rallied to eliminate host UW-La Crosse 2-1 before losing to UW-Whitewater.

Earlier in the week, UW-Stevens Point beat UW-Parkside 1-0 in 10 innings and lost to the Rangers 3-0 in the second game.

Karen Guckenberger (South Milwaukee, WI) pitched four games last week and finished with single-season school records for strikeouts with 143 and ERA at 0.73.

Junior Amanda Sparks (Elcho, WI) drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th against UW-Parkside and also drove in the first run in the win over UW-La Crosse before Amy Schumacher (Milwaukee, WI) followed with another RBI single to put the Pointers up 2-1.

UW-Superior won the WIAC title and the berth to the NCAA Division III tournament.

TRACK AND FIELD

May 10 - at UW-La Crosse Invitational

UW-Stevens Point had seven individual WIAC champions as the men's team placed second and the women finished third at this weekend's outdoor championships in La Crosse.

The Pointer men totaled 185 points, which fell short of UW-La Crosse's 215 points. The women had 143 points and finished behind champion UW-La Crosse with 250 points and runner-up UW-Oshkosh with 173 points.

Becky Lebak (Burlington, WI) won two events for the Pointers, capturing the 5,000 meters by 26 seconds with a time of 17:36.21 and also winning the 10,000 meters in 36:41.68. Kara Vosters (Little Chute, WI) was second in the 10,000 and third in the 5,000.

Amanda Nechuta (Mosinee, WI) won the shot put title with the fifth best throw in the NCAA Division III this season. Her heave of 46 feet, 1/2 inch was an automatic qualifying throw for the Division III championships and she joins Beth Mears in 1990 as the only Pointer women's shot put champions in the past 24 years.

Becky Clarke (Antioch, IL) also successfully defended her javelin title with a throw of 123 feet, seven inches, becoming the sixth two-time champion in the event.

Jody Butkowski (Stevens Point, WI) was second in the triple jump at 37 feet, 9 1/2 inches, while the 4x100 meter relay team was also second in 48.54 seconds.

On the men's side, Mike Mead (Neenah, WI) won the high jump at six feet, nine inches and Cory Lesperance (Sheboygan, WI) claimed the long jump in 23 feet, 2 3/4 inches. Jesse LaLonde (Park Falls, WI) won the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:14.34.

Also, Matt Buska (Mosinee, WI) and Craig Gunderson (Waupaca, WI) tied for second in the 400 meters at 48.69 seconds, while the 4x100 meter relay was second in 41.91 seconds and the 4x400 meter relay was second in 3:16.29.
