The Pointers slugged out 78 runs and hit .384 over six games last week in posting a 5-1 record and remaining within one game of first place in the WIAC.

UW-Stevens Point opened the week with a 15-3 win over UW-Oshkosh before falling 10-8 in the nightcap. The Pointers then swept Superior on Saturday 4-2 and 10-4 and beat the Yellowjackets 23-1 and 18-4 on Sunday.

Sophomore designated hitter Matt Peetz (Spring Green, WI) hit .538 (seven-for-13) over the week, while sophomore catcher Joe Waksmonski (Schofield, WI) hit .480 (12-for-25) with three home runs. Paul Molitor (Reedsburg, WI) drove in 12 runs and hit .464 (13-for-28) for the week. Molitor is now hitting .421 for the season.

Senior rightfielder Ryan Ivy (Kenosha, WI) had hits in all six games last week and extended his hitting streak to 22 games.

The Pointers are 12-4 in the WIAC, while UW-Whitewater sits in first place at 11-3. UW-Stevens Point plays twice at UW-Platteville on Wednesday before hosting UW-Stout for four games over the weekend.

The Pointers had a big week with four conference victories, sweeping doubleheaders from UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville. The Pointers used late rallies to beat UW-Oshkosh 4-2 and 3-2 before toppling UW-Platteville 7-1 and 6-3 over the weekend. Sunday�s doubleheader with St. Norbert was postponed and will be played Thursday in De Pere.

UW-Stevens Point hosts Edgewood for a doubleheader Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Pointers will play their final five WIAC games of the season this weekend in Superior.

Emily Schlender (Baraboo, WI) delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the sixth inning in Tuesday�s opening-game victory over UW-Oshkosh after Stacy Karls (Lodi, WI) tied the game with a two-run homer. Carrie Hermsen (Oconto, WI) drove home Schlender from first base with a double in the bottom of the seventh in the second game.

On Saturday, freshman Casey Schipferling (Mosinee, WI) recorded the first hits of her collegiate career by finishing three-for-three with two home runs against UW-Platteville. Former high school teammate Katie Knoedler (Mosinee, WI) pitched the second-game victory.

Junior pitcher Karen Guckenberger (South Milwaukee, WI) continued her outstanding season with three more wins and a save, pitching 20 innings without allowing an earned run. She now has a 0.40 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 105.1 innings.

Mike Mead (Neenah, WI) jumped six feet, 10 3/4 inches to automatically qualify for the NCAA Division III men's outdoor track and field championships, winning the high jump event at Saturday's Augustana Invitational in Rock Island, Ill.

Mead was one of five winners for the men, who finished second among 10 teams at the meet. UW-Stevens Point totaled 174.5 points to finish behind Nebraska Wesleyan, which had 206 points.

Craig Gunderson (Waupaca, WI) won the 400 meter dash in 49.05 seconds and Scott Dreger (Cambria, WI) captured the javelin with a throw of 173 feet, three inches for the Pointers. Kyle Newman (La Crosse, WI) won the 200 meter dash in 22.26 seconds and was second in the 100 meters with a time of 10.88 seconds. The 4x100 relay team also won with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 41.77 seconds.

Lindsey Fowler (Verona, WI) won the discus and Jody Butkowski (Stevens Point, WI) captured the 200 meter dash to lead the women to a seventh place finish among 13 teams.

Fowler had a throw of 134 feet to edge teammate Megan Lundahl (Sturgeon Bay, WI), who was second with a throw of 133 feet, six inches. Butkowski covered the 200 meters in 25.99 seconds to take the title.

Amanda Nechuta (Mosinee, WI) was fourth in the discus and provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships in the shot put with a heave of 42 feet, 3 1/4 inches.

Wartburg (Iowa) won the women�s title at the meet.

The Pointers will send several runners to the Drake Relays this weekend, while the men�s squad competes at UW-Eau Claire and the women compete at UW-La Crosse.
