RECRUITING PHILOSOPHY
Our recruiting philosophy will always be
that we seek "good people, serious about their academics who love to play golf. As
long as I am coach that will be our focus in presenting UWSP and its academic programs to
high school seniors. At Stevens Point, the mission of athletics is to support and enhance
the educational experience of our athletes"
Our main goal for the team is to help you understand the game of
golf both physically, through teaching you the correct mechanics of the golf
swing, and mentally, through course management. The two of us feel very positive
that no matter what you shoot the day you arrive, YOU WILL be better players at
the end of the session. All we ask is that you are open to change and are
willing to dedicate yourself the entire season.
THE UWSP DIFFERENCE: ACADEMICS
At UWSP academics are the top priority,
not athletics. If a student has a class that conflicts with practice times, that class
takes precedence. We will schedule an individual practice session either before or after
class at SentryWorld, which is less than a mile from campus. Practice ends at 5:15 so that
the residence hall students can get to dinner before any 6:30 pm classes. We take great
caution in scheduling matches during the week; we will play on one or two Friday
afternoons, and one Monday and Tuesday during the fall season. The bulk of our competition
is Saturday and Sunday. That's so we won't take our student/athletes away from classes.
Div. I & II schools will miss an average of one or two days each week.
THE UWSP DIFFERENCE: SQUAD SIZE
At Stevens Point we are
interested in quality, not quantity. Most teams carry ten to fifteen players.
This makes it very difficult for one or two coaches to devote the time needed to
help them develop their game. We carry a squad of six to eight players who get
very individual attention on a daily basis. A small squad size also means that
everyone will get to play in each of our meets. Many schools that carry ten to
fifteen players will have five or six girls stay at home each weekend. Our
philosophy is that you can't get better if you don't play.
THE UWSP DIFFERENCE: SCHEDULING
COMPETITION
The UWSP philosophy is to
provide the best competitive experience that we possibly can for our players. Frequently,
we compete against Division II schools at invitationals and sometimes will go against
Divison I schools. In a typical year, we will compete against teams from
Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Southern Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. We feel we
have one of the strongest Division III golf schedules in the Midwest and we take
pride in that.
