Childs, Defense
Lead Pointers in Rout of Trojans
Box Score
Behind another career-best rushing effort from
senior Cody Childs and a suffocating defensive performance, the UW-Stevens
Point football team posted its second straight lopsided victory with a 35-0
win at Trinity International on Saturday in Deerfield, Ill.
Childs
(pictured, left) had his third career-high rushing total in
four games this season with 194 yards on 24 carries with three touchdowns.
He had 140 of his yards in the first quarter, including an 80-yard touchdown
sprint that was the fourth-longest run from scrimmage in UW-Stevens Point
history.
The Pointers defense limited Trinity
International to just four first downs and held the Trojans to 104 total
yards, including 25 yards rushing on 22 carries. It was the Pointers first
shutout since a 63-0 rout at Tri-State (Ind.) in 2003.
Childs, who leads the conference in rushing and
gained 162 yards last week at Waldorf, opened the scoring on the Pointers
third drive, breaking several tackles at the line of scrimmage and then
busting through the middle of the line to go 38 yards for the score. His
next carry was the 80-yard run that put the Pointers ahead 14-0 in the first
quarter.
UW-Stevens Points defense didnt allow a first
down until Trinity Internationals sixth possession and then Lincoln Berg
had an interception for the third straight game, picking off a pass at the
Trojans 49-yard line with 1:22 left in the half.
The Pointers converted the turnover into points
four plays later as Brett Borchart (pictured, left) connected on four straight passes capped
by a four-yard pass to Brad Kalsow with 35 seconds left in the half.
UW-Stevens Point, playing without top receiver and holder Jacob Dickert, who
had an emergency appendectomy on Friday night, had a mishandled snap on the
extra point and led 20-0 at halftime.
Childs added a one-yard touchdown early in the
third quarter and Luke Gunderson caught a two-point conversion for a 28-0
lead. Kalsow finished the scoring with a highlight-film quality diving catch
in the back of the endzone for a 29-yard touchdown from Borchart.
The Pointers ran 72 plays, compared to just 47 for
the Trojans and outgained Trinity International 472-104. Borchart was
19-for-29 passing for 205 yards. Gunderson caught five passes for 48 yards
and Kalsow had four catches for 54 yards. |
