Childs, Czys and Hayes Lead Pointers on All-WIAC Football Team

Following its third place finish in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, UW-Stevens Point landed a trio of seniors on the leagues first-team all-conference squad.

Running back Cody Childs earned his fourth career all-league award as the teams only offensive selection, while linebacker Brandon Czys and defensive tackle Mike Hayes were defensive choices. Four others were second-team selections as senior offensive tackle Dale Bratz, senior linebacker Lincoln Berg, senior wide receiver Jacob Dickert and sophomore punter Luke Frisch were honored. Senior quarterback Brett Borchart and senior offensive tackle Jon Vissers earned honorable mention.

UW-Stevens Point finished 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the WIAC, ending the season with a four-game winning streak. The Pointers suffered three of their four losses to teams in the top seven in the NCAA Division III rankings.

He also caught 37 passes for 424 yards to lead the WIAC in all-purpose yards at 134.5 per game. Childs finished his career ranked second in school history with 38 career touchdowns, fourth with 193 receptions and fifth with 1,929 yards rushing. He also earned first-team honors in 2004 and was a second-team pick in 2003 and 2005.

A unanimous choice to the all-WIAC team, he ranked 23rd in the NCAA Division III in total tackles and 11th in solo tackles. Also second-team all-WIAC performer in 2005, Czys totaled 89 tackles in league play this season, which was 20 more tackles than any other WIAC player in the seven-game conference schedule.

He ranked fourth among the leagues defensive linemen with 40 tackles, including 26 solo stops. He also was second on the team with seven and a half tackles for loss.

Bratz, a Lowell native who attended Dodgeland High School, started all 10 games, including the last nine at left tackle in his second season as a starter on the offensive line. He started the first six games at right tackle as a junior, but missed the rest of the season with an injury.

Berg, an Edgar native, was a key reason the Pointers ranked second in the league in turnover margin. He had four interceptions, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries, while ranking second on the team and sixth in the league with 76 total tackles.

Dickert, a Kohler native, led the WIAC and ranked 12th nationally with 7.0 receptions per game. He also was third in the league with 74.0 yards receiving per game. Dickert had appendix surgery at mid-season, but returned to the lineup after missing only two games.

Frisch, a Nekoosa native, ranked third in the league in punting average at 38.3 yards. He also helped the Pointers lead the conference in team net punting at 36.2 yards per kick as the return units allowed just 2.2 yards per return.
