Childs, Czys and
Hayes Lead Pointers on All-WIAC Football Team
Following its third place finish in the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, UW-Stevens Point landed a trio of
seniors on the league�s first-team all-conference squad.
Running back Cody Childs earned his fourth career
all-league award as the team�s only offensive selection, while linebacker
Brandon Czys and defensive tackle Mike Hayes were defensive choices. Four
others were second-team selections as senior offensive tackle Dale Bratz,
senior linebacker Lincoln Berg, senior wide receiver Jacob Dickert and sophomore punter Luke Frisch were
honored. Senior quarterback Brett Borchart and senior offensive tackle Jon
Vissers earned honorable mention.
UW-Stevens Point
finished 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the WIAC, ending the season with a four-game
winning streak. The Pointers suffered three of their four losses to teams in
the top seven in the NCAA Division III rankings.
Childs, a Poynette native, posted the third-highest single-season rushing
total in school history and ranked fourth in the league with 906 yards. He
also caught 37 passes for 424 yards to lead the WIAC in all-purpose yards at
134.5 per game. Childs finished his career ranked second in school history
with 38 career touchdowns, fourth with 193 receptions and fifth with 1,929
yards rushing. He also earned first-team honors in 2004 and was a
second-team pick in 2003 and 2005.
Czys, a Mauston native, led the WIAC with 108 tackles, including 66 solo
stops. A unanimous choice to the all-WIAC team, he ranked 23rd in the NCAA
Division III in total tackles and 11th in solo tackles. Also second-team
all-WIAC performer in 2005, Czys totaled 89 tackles in league play this
season, which was 20 more tackles than any other WIAC player in the
seven-game conference schedule.
Hayes, a Beaver Dam native, was a key part of the Pointers� rushing defense
that ranked second in the WIAC at 130.2 yards allowed per game. He ranked
fourth among the league�s defensive linemen with 40 tackles, including 26
solo stops. He also was second on the team with seven and a half tackles for
loss.
Bratz, a Lowell
native who attended Dodgeland High School, started all 10 games, including
the last nine at left tackle in his second season as a starter on the
offensive line. He started the first six games at right tackle as a junior,
but missed the rest of the season with an injury.
Berg, an Edgar
native, was a key reason the Pointers ranked second in the league in
turnover margin. He had four interceptions, three forced fumbles and three
fumble recoveries, while ranking second on the team and sixth in the league
with 76 total tackles.
Dickert, a Kohler
native, led the WIAC and ranked 12th nationally with 7.0 receptions per
game. He also was third in the league with 74.0 yards receiving per game.
Dickert had appendix surgery at mid-season, but returned to the lineup after
missing only two games.
Frisch, a Nekoosa
native, ranked third in the league in punting average at 38.3 yards. He also
helped the Pointers lead the conference in team net punting at 36.2 yards
per kick as the return units allowed just 2.2 yards per return.
Borchart, a Huntley,
Ill. native, led the league in total offense at 226.8 yards per game. He
also led the league in offense in 2004 and ranked second in 2005, finishing
fifth in school history in the category with 7,758 total yards for his
career.
Vissers, a Schofield
native who attended D.C. Everest High School, started all 10 games,
including the last nine at left tackle. He was a three-year starter on the
line and finished his career with 28 consecutive starts.
Conference champion
UW-Whitewater had repeat selections in the league�s Player of the Year in
Justin Jacobs and Coach of the Year in Bob Berezowitz. |
