Stretch of Ranked Foes Ends in
Loss to Warhawks

A challenging five-game stretch is finally over
for the UW-Stevens Point football team, culminating in a 44-12 loss to
UW-Whitewater on Saturday in Stevens Point.
Battered with injuries and playing its fourth
highly ranked foe in the first five games, the Pointers surrendered the most
yards they�ve ever allowed in a single game. The Warhawks amassed 663 total
yards as running back Justin Beaver had a career high for the second
straight game with 212 yards on 34 carries and Derek Stanley totaled 143
yards receiving on four catches � all in the first quarter.
UW-Stevens Point played without its top three
running backs and suffered several more injuries on the afternoon. The
eighth-ranked Warhawks continued their strong first half play by building a
20-0 halftime advantage and have now outscored their five opponents 133-22
in the first half. It was a complete turnaround from UW-Whitewater�s last
visit to Goerke Field when the Pointers led 39-0 at the half in a 60-30
victory.
UW-Whitewater scored touchdowns on its first two
possessions as Stanley caught a 14-yard pass from Justin Jacobs on the first
drive and Beaver broke loose for a 34-yard score to push the lead to 14-0.
The teams traded interceptions and the Warhawks
finished off a big first quarter as Jacobs took the snap with one second
remaining and fired a 53-yard pass to Stanley to the Pointers� 15-yard line,
setting up a 32-yard field goal by Mike Chaulk. The Warhawks gained 236
yards on 19 plays in the first quarter. Chaulk added a 39-yard field goal
midway through the half for a 20-0 advantage.
Another Chaulk field goal from 24 yards opened the
second half and Beaver scored on a one-yard dive with 24 seconds left in the
third quarter for a 30-0 lead.
UW-Stevens Point mounted most of its offense in
the fourth quarter, going 67 yards in five plays and scoring on a six-yard
run by Eric Reible. After UW-Whitewater added a pair of touchdowns, the
Pointers got another score on a one-yard sneak by quarterback Brett Borchart
with 5:18 remaining.
UW-Stevens Point finished with 255 total yards as
Reible gained 54 yards on 15 carries. Jacob Dickert had 61 yards receiving
on three catches.
Jacobs finished 16-for-28 passing for 316 yards
and two touchdowns for UW-Whitewater. Jim Leszczynski added four catches for
95 yards. The Warhawks� 663 yards surpassed UW-Stevens Point�s previous
record of 612 yards given up against UW-River Falls on Oct. 29, 1983. |
