Pointers Power Past Waldorf For Victory

Box Score

UW-Stevens Point used a strong offensive performance, beginning with its first play of the game to roll past Waldorf for a 42-13 victory on Saturday at Goerke Field.

The Pointers amassed 519 total yards of offense, including 296 yards passing and four touchdowns from quarterback Brett Borchart to earn a much-needed victory after season-opening losses to highly-ranked Hardin-Simmons and Linfield. The win came in the annual Spud Bowl as the Pointers improved to 18-1 all-time in the event.

After forcing Waldorf to punt on its opening possession, the Pointers wasted no time in getting started as Borchart lofted a deep pass to Cody Childs for a 56-yard touchdown and an early 7-0 advantage. Childs finished as the teams leading receiver with seven catches for 130 yards.

Waldorf bounced right back, scoring on its very next play as Dan Steffen caught an 80-yard pass down the right sideline from Michael Lewis. The extra point hit the upright and the Pointers held a 7-6 lead.

UW-Stevens Point junior wide receiver Jake Dickert also had a big day, scoring and throwing his first career touchdowns. He caught the first of three straight touchdown receptions with three seconds left in the first quarter on a 16-yard pass from Borchart for a 14-6 lead.

Borchart connected with Dickert for a 20-yard score midway through the second quarter and found him for a five-yard touchdown on the Pointers first drive of the third quarter for a 28-6 lead. Dickert caught four passes for 46 yards and three touchdowns. He also entered the game as a reserve quarterback in the fourth quarter and threw a 19-yard touchdown to sophomore Kevin Neu, marking Neus first career reception.

Damon Mehlberg had a big day on the ground for the Pointers, gaining 97 yards on 10 carries, including a 46-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter. Mehlberg started to the right and cut up the middle, breaking several tackles on the way to the endzone. Eric Reible added 71 yards on six carries.

Jeremie Schwartz finished with five receptions for 55 yards and Dustin Robinson had three catches for 60 yards for the Pointers, who totaled 315 yards through the air and 204 yards rushing.

Waldorf gained 377 total yards and was led by Marcus Lewis with 10 carries for 94 yards. Adam Whiting had 13 carries for 79 yards and Michael Lewis was 11-for-19 passing for 151 yards.
