Big Plays Help Pointers Cap Successful Finish

Box Score

UW-Stevens Point used one big play after another to cap its football season in successful fashion with a 38-26 victory over UW-Stout on Saturday at Goerke Field in Stevens Point.

The Pointers opened the game with an 80-yard touchdown pass from Brett Borchart to Brad Kalsow on the first play from scrimmage and never trailed in the triumph. UW-Stevens Point won its final two games to finish 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while UW-Stout ended 6-4 overall and 3-4 in the league.

The point total was the most allowed by the Blue Devils this season as Borchart finished 19-for-35 passing for 328 yards and three touchdowns. The victory also moved Pointers18th-year coach John Miech into a tie for fourth place on the all-time WIAC coaching victories list with 117 wins to match UW-River Falls Mike Farley, who coached from 1970-88.

After Kalsows big catch on the opening possession, Pointers cornerback Chase Kostichka picked off a pass on UW-Stouts first drive and raced 47 yards to the endzone to put UW-Stevens Point ahead 14-0 just 2:11 into the game.

UW-Stouts Jesse Wendt caught a 41-yard touchdown pass from Keldric Stokes and Evan Larsen kicked a 25-yard field goal with 29 seconds left in the first quarter to pull the Blue Devils within 14-10 after one period. Dan Heldmann kicked a 32-yard field goal late in the half for the Pointers and UW-Stout tied the game at halftime on a five-yard pass from Stokes to Wendt for a 17-17 tie at intermission.

UW-Stevens Point used another big play on its first drive of the second half as Cody Childs cut through the middle of the line and sprinted 56 yards for a touchdown and a 24-17 lead. A big hit from Tyler Florczak forced a Blue Devils fumble the ensuing kickoff and the Pointers took advantage with a 19-yard pass from Borchart to Eric Reible on a third-and-eight play for a 31-17 cushion.

UW-Stouts Joe Seep had an interception on the Pointers next possession, setting up a 27-yard field goal by Larsen that pulled the Blue Devils within 31-20 after three quarters. UW-Stout then went 86 yards in 15 plays and scored on a one-yard run by Andy Reese with 9:27 left in the third quarter. A two-point conversion attempt failed, keeping the Pointers ahead 31-26.

The Blue Devils had two more possessions at midfield, but Pointers defensive back Chase Kostichka broke up a third down pass to stop the first drive and LaRon Ragsdale had an interception on the next possession following a tipped pass by Lincoln Berg with 3:02 remaining.

Borchart threw a deep pass for 35 yards to a diving Dickert on a third-and-14 play with 2:45 left and then capped the game with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Dickert with 1:04 remaining. Ragsdale had his second interception in the final minutes to seal the win.

Dickert caught six passes for 126 yards, while Kalsow had five catches for 138 yards for the Pointers. Childs rushed for 66 yards on 13 carries. Reese led the Blue Devils with 138 yards rushing on 24 attempts and Wendt had eight catches for 119 yards.
