Pointers Earn First League Win
Over UW-River Falls

UW-Stevens Point used a solid ball control effort
to earn its first conference victory of the season with a 23-16 win over
UW-River Falls on Saturday at Goerke Field.
The Pointers held the ball for over 35 minutes
despite entering the game ranked last in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference in average time of possession. UW-Stevens Point, which
held the ball over 10 minutes in the first and fourth quarters, had a
near-perfect balance of rushing and passing to earn its first conference win
of the season and improve to 2-4 overall with all four losses coming to top
10 ranked teams. Pointers� quarterback Brett Borchart had a big day, passing
23-for-35 for 255 yards and rushing for 83 yards and two touchdowns on 12
carries.
UW-River Falls entered the game leading the WIAC
in time of possession, but the Pointers� defense limited the Falcons to
three-for-15 passing and had a huge fourth down stop late in the fourth
quarter for the victory.
The Pointers opened the scoring with a pair of
long drives that both resulted in field goals by Dan Heldmann. An opening
12-play, 59-yard drive was capped by a 23-yard field goal and a 10-play,
71-yard drive culminated in a 26-yard kick early in the second quarter.
UW-River Falls answered with a 42-yard field goal
by Spasimir Bodurski, but Borchart put the Pointers up 13-3 with a 22-yard
touchdown run with 6:12 left in the first half.
The Falcons had a 73-yard drive late in the half
that was finished off by a 32-yard touchdown run by Jeremy Wolff, who
totaled 207 yards rushing on 19 carries. UW-River Falls was flagged for
unsportsmanlike conduct after the score and missed the extra point,
resulting in a 13-9 UW-Stevens Point lead at halftime.
Heldmann added a 24-yard field goal following a
14-play, 74 yard drive in the third quarter, but the Falcons evened the
score quickly as Wolff scored two plays later on a 69-yard run to tie the
game at 16-16 with 5:11 left in the third quarter.
UW-Stevens Point marched 86 yards in 14 plays for
the winning score as Borchart completed passes for first downs on three
third down plays, including an 18-yard pass to Jacob Dickert on a
third-and-14 from the 30-yard line. Borchart finished the drive with a
one-yard sneak with 6:15 remaining.
UW-River Falls drove to the Pointers� 42-yard
line, but Dan Robinson and J.J. Chaudoir broke through to drop fullback Nathan Anderson for a loss of three
yards on a fourth-and-two play with 3:10 left to end the drive. Robinson
finished the day with a career-high 13 tackles, including three stops in
four plays on the Falcons' final series of downs.
UW-Stevens Point gained 484 total yards with 255
passing and 229 rushing. Cody Childs had a career-high 11 catches for 107
yards. UW-River Falls had 348 total yards for the game. |
