Pointers Continue Dominance of
UW-Platteville

UW-Stevens Point continued its supremacy over
UW-Platteville with its 15th straight victory over the Pioneers, forcing
five turnovers and controlling the ball for nearly two-thirds of the game in
a 31-3 win at Platteville.
The Pointers held UW-Platteville to 31 yards
rushing on 27 carries to snap a two-game losing streak. UW-Stevens Point
held the ball for 39 minutes and six seconds in its first road victory of
the season as the Pointers improved to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-Platteville dropped its eighth
straight game while falling to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in the WIAC.
UW-Stevens Point took advantage of a failed
Pioneers� fake punt early in the game and drove 39 yards for a two-yard
touchdown sneak by quarterback Brett Borchart. After UW-Platteville punted,
the Pointers used up the remainder of the first quarter in a 17-play,
75-yard drive that lasted 8:43 and ended with a seven-yard run by Eric
Reible for a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter. The Pointers outgained
the Pioneers 117-9 in the first quarter, holding UW-Platteville to no first
downs in the period.
UW-Platteville got its only points of the game on
the final play of the half when Jason Borchardt connected on a 30-yard field
goal to cut the Pointers� lead to 14-3 at intermission.
The Pointers broke the game open in the second
half as Dan Heldmann hit a 25-yard field goal and Cody Childs caught a
25-yard touchdown from Borchart for a 24-3 advantage. Reible finished the
scoring with a 16-yard sprint up the middle on a fourth-and-five play with
1:38 remaining in the game. Three of the Pointers� touchdowns came following
fourth down stops as the Pioneers were zero-for-four on fourth down.
Borchart finished 14-for-21 passing for 230 yards,
connecting seven times with Jacob Dickert for 132 yards. Dustin Robinson led
the Pointers� ground attack with 26 carries for 75 yards. UW-Stevens Point
totaled 394 yards for the game.
UW-Platteville totaled 328 yards for the game, but
was continually hampered by turnovers. The Pioneers had six fumbles and lost
three, matching UW-Stevens Point�s total fumble recoveries in their first
eight games. Kasey Morgan and Jared Flesch also added interceptions for the
Pointers� defense. Brent Nelson threw for 257 yards for the Pioneers and Joe
Danielson had six catches for 103 yards. |
