Pointers Drop Conference Opener
at UW-La Crosse
Box Score
In the midst of a brutal early season stretch of
the schedule, the UW-Stevens Point football team fell to 1-3 overall with a
loss to another ranked opponent in a 24-0 defeat Saturday at UW-La Crosse.
The Pointers, playing the third of four
highly-ranked opponents among the first five games, had several solid drives
end in turnovers against the Eagles defense in the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener.
After losses to fourth-ranked Hardin-Simmons and
top-ranked Linfield, the Pointers were limited to 221 total yards by
14th-ranked UW-La Crosse and prepare next week for 11th-ranked UW-Whitewater
at Goerke Field.
UW-La Crosse opened the scoring with a 10-play,
44-yard drive in the first quarter that was capped by a 32-yard field goal
by Ryan Corneiller. UW-Stevens Point moved deep into Eagles territory, but
fumbled a snap on a field goal attempt at the 20-yard line. The Eagles added
a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter when John Schumann hit
Jason Wagner on a five-yard fade in the corner of the endzone on a third
down play.
UW-La Crosse went ahead 17-0 with 5:17 left in the
half when Corey Geldernick scored on a two-yard run to finish a 10-play,
90-yard drive. The Pointers drove deep into Eagles territory to the 32-yard
line late in the half, but UW-La Crosses Gene Janke picked off Brett
Borchart to end the threat.
UW-Stevens Point had momentum again early in the
second half, moving to the Eagles 20-yard line before a fumble ended the
drive. The Eagles followed the miscue with another lengthy drive late in the
third quarter, going 79 yards in 14 plays as Geldernick scored on a
three-yard run with 1:12 left in the period for a 24-0 advantage.
Geldernick finished the day with 100 yards on 23
carries and the two touchdowns. John Schumann was 16-for-28 passing for 202
yards and one touchdown.
