Pointers Unable to Cash in
Against Blugolds

UW-Stevens Point outgained UW-Eau Claire and moved
deep into Blugolds� territory much of the game, but it was UW-Eau Claire
that came up with every big play in posting its first win in Stevens Point
since 1987 with a 17-3 victory on Saturday.
The Pointers put the ball inside the Blugolds�
40-yard line seven times, but came away with just three points as UW-Eau
Claire�s defense came up with five interceptions in the victory.
UW-Stevens Point fell to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in
the conference with the loss, while UW-Eau Claire remained in the conference
title chase, remaining one game behind first place UW-Whitewater with a 4-1
league mark and 5-3 overall record.
UW-Stevens Point gained 399 total yards and held
UW-Eau Claire to 333 yards and one offensive touchdown. Both teams
squandered several quality drives in the first half with the Blugolds
getting the only points of the half on a 32-yard field goal from Mitch
Schaueble early in the second quarter. Each team had a field goal blocked
and was stopped on downs in the first half as the Blugolds held a 3-0 lead
at intermission.
UW-Eau Claire chose to kickoff to start the second
half and the move worked as Brad Alexjun picked off a pass on the Pointers�
third play of the half and returned it 42 yards for a score, putting the
Blugolds ahead 10-0.
The Pointers drove all the way to the UW-Eau
Claire four-yard line on their next possession, but Derek Sikora ended the
drive with an interception in the endzone on a third-and-goal play. UW-Eau
Claire took advantage of the turnover with an impressive drive, marching 80
yards in 19 plays and seven minutes and 39 seconds capped by a one-yard run
by Joe Gast to push the lead to 17-0.
UW-Stevens Point got a 22-yard field goal from Dan
Heldmann with 4:37 left after Brett Borchart connected with Jake VanDerGeest
for a 35-yard pass play to the Blugolds� 11-yard line. The Pointers stopped
UW-Eau Claire on its possession and got the ball back with 3:32 left and no
timeouts. They drove to the Blugolds� 31-yard line before another
interception by Sikora with 2:21 left ended the drive.
Gast finished with 137 yards on 36 carries to lead
the Blugolds, while Dustin Robinson finished with 97 yards on 19 carries,
marking the most yards rushing by a UW-Stevens Point player this season.
Jacob Dickert caught six passes for a career-high 125 yards as Borchart was
19-for-34 passing for 274 yards. |
