Pointers Unable to Cash in Against Blugolds

Box Score

UW-Stevens Point outgained UW-Eau Claire and moved deep into Blugolds territory much of the game, but it was UW-Eau Claire that came up with every big play in posting its first win in Stevens Point since 1987 with a 17-3 victory on Saturday.

The Pointers put the ball inside the Blugolds 40-yard line seven times, but came away with just three points as UW-Eau Claires defense came up with five interceptions in the victory.

UW-Stevens Point fell to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the conference with the loss, while UW-Eau Claire remained in the conference title chase, remaining one game behind first place UW-Whitewater with a 4-1 league mark and 5-3 overall record.

UW-Stevens Point gained 399 total yards and held UW-Eau Claire to 333 yards and one offensive touchdown. Both teams squandered several quality drives in the first half with the Blugolds getting the only points of the half on a 32-yard field goal from Mitch Schaueble early in the second quarter. Each team had a field goal blocked and was stopped on downs in the first half as the Blugolds held a 3-0 lead at intermission.

UW-Eau Claire chose to kickoff to start the second half and the move worked as Brad Alexjun picked off a pass on the Pointers third play of the half and returned it 42 yards for a score, putting the Blugolds ahead 10-0.

The Pointers drove all the way to the UW-Eau Claire four-yard line on their next possession, but Derek Sikora ended the drive with an interception in the endzone on a third-and-goal play. UW-Eau Claire took advantage of the turnover with an impressive drive, marching 80 yards in 19 plays and seven minutes and 39 seconds capped by a one-yard run by Joe Gast to push the lead to 17-0.

UW-Stevens Point got a 22-yard field goal from Dan Heldmann with 4:37 left after Brett Borchart connected with Jake VanDerGeest for a 35-yard pass play to the Blugolds 11-yard line. The Pointers stopped UW-Eau Claire on its possession and got the ball back with 3:32 left and no timeouts. They drove to the Blugolds 31-yard line before another interception by Sikora with 2:21 left ended the drive.

Gast finished with 137 yards on 36 carries to lead the Blugolds, while Dustin Robinson finished with 97 yards on 19 carries, marking the most yards rushing by a UW-Stevens Point player this season. Jacob Dickert caught six passes for a career-high 125 yards as Borchart was 19-for-34 passing for 274 yards.
