Pointers Back in
First Place After Clipping Warhawks
Box Score
Just three weeks after finding itself 0-2 in the
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings, the UW-Stevens
Point football team is back in first place.
The Pointers knocked off previous leader and
13th-ranked UW-Whitewater 15-12 with their second straight fourth quarter
rally on Saturday and also saw co-leaders UW-La Crosse and UW-Eau Claire
falter, forcing a four-way logjam atop the league standings.
UW-Stevens Point trailed 12-7 in the fourth
quarter before scoring the game-winning touchdown when Brett Borchart
connected with Kurt Kielblock for a 23-yard touchdown pass on a
fourth-and-16 play with 7:35 left in the game. Borcharts pass was tipped by
two UW-Whitewater defenders before landing in Kielblocks arms for the
score. Borchart then hit Tony Romano for a two-point conversion to put the
Pointers ahead 15-12.
The Warhawks were just one-for-15 on third down
plays and converted their only third down on the ensuing drive, which took
them to the Pointers 30-yard line with 4:17 left, but Michael Chaulk missed
a potential game-tying 46-yard field goal. The Pointers then converted a
pair of third downs and were able to run out the clock for the victory.
It was the Pointers third straight win over
UW-Whitewater, but a much different game than last season when they rolled
up 390 passing yards and led 39-0 at halftime in a 60-30 blitzing of the
Warhawks.
After a scoreless first quarter, Chaulk opened the
scoring by hitting field goals from 32 and 41 yards in the second quarter.
UW-Stevens Point took the lead when Borchart passed to Kielblock for a
19-yard score with 32 seconds left in the half. However, after Trey Bell
returned a squib kickoff to the Pointers 49-yard line, the Warhawks drove
to the 23-yard line when Mike Askren found a wide open Derek Stanley for a
touchdown with six seconds left in the half. UW-Whitewater missed a
two-point conversion attempt to hold a 12-7 lead at the half.
Borchart was ranked sixth in the NCAA Division III
in passing and was held to 13-for-30 for 106 yards. However, he burned the
Warhawks with his running ability several times, gaining 87 yards on 17
attempts. Kielblock caught six passes for 55 yards, including the two
touchdowns.
UW-Whitewaters Colin Burns entered the day ranked
sixth nationally in rushing and posted 192 yards on 37 carries. The Warhawks
completed just one pass for seven yards in the second half, coming on their
first play of the fourth quarter. |
