Pointers Start
Slow Before Rolling Over Waldorf
Box Score
Forest City, Iowa - It may have taken UW-Stevens
Point a quarter to get started, but once the Pointers shook off their first
road trip of the season and got rolling, they proved no match for Waldorf in
a 41-7 win over the Warriors on Saturday at Bolstorff Field.
UW-Stevens Point quarterback Brett Borchart was
17-for-29 passing for 336 yards and four touchdowns with 331 of his yards
coming in the first half. Borchart amassed 248 yards and three touchdowns
alone in a 24-point second quarter.
The Pointers rolled up 533 total yards for the
game as reserve quarterback Jake Dickert completed three of his four pass
attempts for 89 yards. UW-Stevens Point also held the Warriors to zero yards
passing in the second half.
Waldorf scored the games opening points after
UW-Stevens Point fumbled a punt on its own 10-yard line. Daniel Steffan
caught a 12-yard pass on third down to put the Warriors ahead with 2:36 left
in the first quarter.
The Pointers dominated from that point, going 72
yards in six plays and scoring on an eight-yard run by Cody Childs to tie
the game. In the second quarter, Borchart hit Kurt Kielblock with a
five-yard touchdown pass for a 14-7 lead.
Dan Heldmann kicked a 31-yard field goal on
UW-Stevens Points next possession and, following a Waldorf punt, Borchart
found Kielblock on a short screen pass and the senior sprinted untouched 78
yards for a touchdown and a 24-7 lead.
UW-Stevens Point committed consecutive holding
penalties the next time it had the ball, but Borchart passed 35 yards to
Ross Adamczak for a first down. Then after another penalty forced the
Pointers into a third-and-18, Tony Romano caught a short pass on the left
sideline and raced 51 yards to put UW-Stevens Point ahead 31-7.
In the second half, the Pointers posted an eight
play, 81-yard drive that ended with a 28-yard field goal by John Ryan early
in the fourth quarter. After a Waldorf fumble, the Pointers drove three
plays for a touchdown as Eric Reible plunged into the endzone from one yard
out.
