Pointers Roll Over
Tri-State in Season Opener
Box Score
It didnt take long for the UW-Stevens Point
football team to pick up right where it left off the 2003 season, rolling up
another huge offensive day in a 57-3 rout of Tri-State in its season opener
Saturday at Goerke Field.
The Pointers extended their winning streak to six
straight games and have now scored 221 points over the last four contests.
UW-Stevens Point amassed 552 total yards against the Thunder and improved to
17-1 all-time in Spud Bowl games.
Sophomore quarterback Brett Borchart made his
first career start a memorable one, throwing for 254 yards and five
touchdowns while also rushing for 63 yards and a touchdown. Senior Tony
Romano was his favorite target, making four catches for 146 yards and two
touchdowns.
UW-Stevens Points only punt of the game came on
its opening possession and Borchart threw an interception on the second
possession. However, the transfer from Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) settled
in after J.J. Chaudoir recovered a fumble on the Pointers 12-yard line.
Borchart completed three straight passes and then raced 42 yards himself for
a touchdown.
Borchart threw a 23-yard touchdown to Ross
Adamczak in the second quarter and then followed up Chase Kostichkas first
of two interceptions with a 37-yard strike to Romano for a 21-0 lead.
Kostichka had another interception to set up a 44-yard field goal by John
Ryan with seven seconds left, marking the Pointers longest field goal since
1996. Borchart did not throw an incomplete pass until his 14th attempt,
completing 11 of his first 13 with two interceptions.
Cody Childs caught a seven-yard touchdown early in
the second quarter for a 31-0 lead and, after a 21-yard field goal by
Tri-States Justin Hoover, Childs caught a five-yard touchdown to make it
38-3. Borcharts final pass of the day was a 60-yard touchdown to Romano
with 2:09 left in the third quarter and Brett Ehret returned an interception
41 yards for a touchdown with 1:50 left in the quarter for a 50-3 lead.
Freshman Dustin Robinson had a 74-yard touchdown
run early in the third quarter and finished as UW-Stevens Points leading
rusher with 122 yards on 11 carries, gaining 125 of his yards in the fourth
quarter. Childs rushed 15 times for 89 yards and caught four passes for 39
yards.
Robinsons brother, Dan, recorded two sacks in the
fourth quarter. Steve Garvoille totaled eight tackles for UW-Stevens Point
and Jarrod Phillips had 15 tackles for Tri-State. Jim Oliver, Jr. was
15-for-34 passing for 229 yards for the Thunder. |
