Pointers Get on Track by Beating UW-Stout

Box Score

UW-Stevens Point picked up its first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory and snapped a two-game losing streak by posting a 23-7 victory at UW-Stout on Saturday in Menomonie.

The Pointers defense that entered the game ranked eighth in the conference, held the Blue Devils to one touchdown and also turned in the games biggest play when LaRon Ragsdale returned an interception 77 yards for a touchdown and the first score of the game with 23 seconds left in the first half.

UW-Stevens Point twice drove to the UW-Stout one-yard line in the first half, but were stopped short of the goal line on three straight plays during a first quarter drive and fumbled on first-and-goal in the second quarter.

After Ragsdale put the Pointers ahead 7-0 at halftime, the Pointers forced UW-Stout to punt after three plays on its first second half possession and then Brett Borchart connected with tight end Ross Adamczak for a 50-yard touchdown to put UW-Stevens Point ahead 14-0. It was the biggest play on a career day for Adamczak, who caught a career-best eight passes for 132 yards.

UW-Stevens Point had a 13-play drive end with a botched field goal play, but then had an eight-play drive on its next possession that culminated in a 12-yard touchdown run by Cody Childs for a 20-0 lead. Childs had 71 yards on 23 carries as the Pointers gained 89 yards rushing in the second half after having minus-one yard in the first half.

The Blue Devils gained just 11 yards on their first 10 plays of the third quarter before quarterback Nick Ohman hit John Freeman for a 65-yard pass to the five-yard line on the final play of the period. The senior then found Jesse Wendt for a five-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth quarter to pull UW-Stout within 20-7.

However, the Pointers converted a third-and-one play on the next drive when Borchart hit Tony Romano for a 37-yard pass play to set up a 32-yard field goal by Dan Heldmann and take a 23-7 lead. Romano also had a big day with eight catches for 159 yards.

Borchart entered the game ranked fifth nationally in total offense and had another successful day with 358 yards on 24-for-38 passing as the Pointers rolled up 446 total yards and held the ball for 20:02 of the second half.

Ohman supplied most of UW-Stouts offense, rushing for 163 yards on 22 carries and throwing for 167 yards on 10-for-34 passing. The Blue Devils had seven drives cross the UW-Stevens Point 40-yard line, but only scored once.
