Track by Beating UW-Stout

UW-Stevens Point picked up its first Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory and snapped a two-game losing
streak by posting a 23-7 victory at UW-Stout on Saturday in Menomonie.
The Pointers� defense that entered the game ranked
eighth in the conference, held the Blue Devils to one touchdown and also
turned in the game�s biggest play when LaRon Ragsdale returned an
interception 77 yards for a touchdown and the first score of the game with
23 seconds left in the first half.
UW-Stevens Point twice drove to the UW-Stout
one-yard line in the first half, but were stopped short of the goal line on
three straight plays during a first quarter drive and fumbled on
first-and-goal in the second quarter.
After Ragsdale put the Pointers ahead 7-0 at
halftime, the Pointers forced UW-Stout to punt after three plays on its
first second half possession and then Brett Borchart connected with tight
end Ross Adamczak for a 50-yard touchdown to put UW-Stevens Point ahead
14-0. It was the biggest play on a career day for Adamczak, who caught a
career-best eight passes for 132 yards.
UW-Stevens Point had a 13-play drive end with a
botched field goal play, but then had an eight-play drive on its next
possession that culminated in a 12-yard touchdown run by Cody Childs for a
20-0 lead. Childs had 71 yards on 23 carries as the Pointers gained 89 yards
rushing in the second half after having minus-one yard in the first half.
The Blue Devils gained just 11 yards on their
first 10 plays of the third quarter before quarterback Nick Ohman hit John
Freeman for a 65-yard pass to the five-yard line on the final play of the
period. The senior then found Jesse Wendt for a five-yard touchdown pass on
the first play of the fourth quarter to pull UW-Stout within 20-7.
However, the Pointers converted a third-and-one
play on the next drive when Borchart hit Tony Romano for a 37-yard pass play
to set up a 32-yard field goal by Dan Heldmann and take a 23-7 lead. Romano
also had a big day with eight catches for 159 yards.
Borchart entered the game ranked fifth nationally
in total offense and had another successful day with 358 yards on 24-for-38
passing as the Pointers rolled up 446 total yards and held the ball for
20:02 of the second half.
Ohman supplied most of UW-Stout�s offense, rushing
for 163 yards on 22 carries and throwing for 167 yards on 10-for-34 passing.
The Blue Devils had seven drives cross the UW-Stevens Point 40-yard line,
but only scored once. |
