Pointers Roll Past Warhawks With 60-Point Effort

UW-Stevens Point scored on five of its first six
possessions and posted its biggest point total ever against UW-Whitewater
with a 60-30 triumph over the Warhawks Saturday in Stevens Point.
Pointers� quarterback Scott Krause was 22-for-28
passing for 390 yards and five touchdowns as well as two rushing touchdowns.
Junior tight end Ross Adamczak had career-best numbers with seven catches
for 195 yards and two touchdowns as the Pointers posted the biggest point
total the Warhawks have allowed since 1984.
UW-Stevens Point, ranked 22nd in Division III,
snapped UW-Whitewater�s six-game winning streak and moved to within one game
of the first place Warhawks. UW-Whitewater is ranked 13th nationally and is
now 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference. UW-Stevens Point is 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the conference. The
Pointers, who converted nine of their first 12 third down plays, outgained
the Warhawks 545-241, holding UW-Whitewater to 26 yards rushing on 24
carries.
It was the Pointers� highest point total in a WIAC
game since a 62-34 win over UW-Stout in 1998. UW-Stevens Point has now
scored 56 points or more three times this season for the first time ever.
UW-Stevens Point�s Chase Kostichka and Ryan
Bentley each had interceptions on the Warhawks� first two drives as the
Pointers built a 27-0 first quarter lead. Krause hit Tony Romano for a
six-yard score after Kostichka�s pick and Childs scored from two yards out
after Bentley�s interception. Krause hit Romano for a 27-yard score with
4:09 left in the quarter and Krause ran for a six-yard score himself.
Krause hit Adamczak for 44-yard and 18-yard
touchdowns in the second quarter as the Pointers extended the lead to 39-0
at halftime, outgaining the Warhawks 320-75 in the first 30 minutes.
UW-Whitewater�s Derek Stanley returned the second
half kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown, but the Pointers drove 65 yards in
eight plays and Krause dove to the pylon for a five-yard score to push the
lead back to 46-7.
Mark Blau added a one-yard score early in the
fourth quarter, but again the Pointers answered as Krause hit Adamczak for a
61-yard pass play to set up a 22-yard touchdown strike to Romano. Romano
finished with seven catches for 86 yards and three scores.
Justin Jacobs found Sean Erner for a 28-yard
touchdown for UW-Whitewater before Pointer running back Eric Reible added a
19-yard scoring run for a 60-22 lead. Reible finished with 96 yards in his
first career start in place of regular injured starters Cory Flisakowski and
Jason VanderVelden.
Eric Stauss caught a 50-yard touchdown off a
deflected pass for the final scoring. Jacobs finished with 150 yards on
12-for-21 passing for the Warhawks. |
