Pointers Post Biggest Shutout in 82 Years

ANGOLA, Ind. � UW-Stevens Point posted its biggest shutout win
since 1921 as Scott Krause set a school record with completions in 18 of 19
passes in a 63-0 rout over Tri-State University on Saturday.
Krause threw for 269 yards and five touchdowns as the Pointers had
their fourth-biggest victory margin ever and the largest by shutout since a
108-0 win over St. Norbert on Oct. 15, 1921.
UW-Stevens Point never allowed Tri-State inside its 40-yard line in
posting its first shutout since a 54-0 win over UW-Platteville on Sept. 27,
1997. It was the first meeting ever between the two schools and UW-Stevens
Point outgained Tri-State 542-139, holding the Thunder to nine first downs.
Krause found Cody Childs for a nine-yard touchdown pass on the
Pointers� first drive as the Pointers led just 7-0 after one quarter.
However, UW-Stevens Point had its second-biggest second quarter ever with 28
points off three Tri-State turnovers. Defensive tackle Clint Bakken scored
his first career touchdown on a fourth-and-goal play with a one-yard run and
Cory Flisakowski scored the first of his two touchdowns with an 11-yard
score.
Krause threw a 38-yard touchdown to Kurt Kielblock with 1:53 left in
the half and a five-yard scoring strike to Ross Adamczak 52 seconds before
halftime to give the Pointers a 35-0 lead.
The senior quarterback connected on his first 12 passing attempts of
the game, including all 11 in the first half and his first throw of the
second half that resulted in a 40-yard touchdown to Kielblock. On the second
play of the fourth quarter, Krause connected with Tony Romano for a 44-yard
touchdown to make it 49-0.
Flisakowski added a 24-yard touchdown run on the Pointers� next
drive as the junior running back finished with a career-high 149 yards on 25
carries. Kielblock caught four passes for 101 yards, marking his second
straight 100-yard game in his only two career starts at wide receiver.
Tri-State made its deepest penetration into Pointer territory with
under four minutes left in the game, advancing to the 40-yard line, but
fumbled. Wes Kornowske returned the loose ball 54 yards for a touchdown to
finish the scoring.
UW-Stevens Point forced six turnovers, including four fumbles. The
Pointers punted just once in the game and had an average starting field
position of the Tri-State 49-yard line.
