UW-Stout's Big First Half Too Much for Pointers
Box Score
UW-Stout scored on six of its first nine
possessions to build an insurmountable second half lead to hold off
ninth-ranked UW-Stevens Point 37-27 on Saturday at Goerke Field in Stevens
Point.
Luke Bundgaard rushed for a career-high 176 yards
on 38 carries to lead the 25th-ranked Blue Devils in the victory. The senior
running back keyed a big UW-Stout first half with 116 yards in the first two
quarters, including 77 yards in the first period.
With the victory, UW-Stout remained alive in the
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title chase, improving to 3-2
overall and 1-1 in the conference. UW-Stevens Point took a serious blow to
its title hopes, falling to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the WIAC. The Pointers
lost their homecoming game for the fourth straight year, despite a 10-5
record in their last 15 home games over the span.
UW-Stevens Point had not allowed a point in the
first 29 minutes of any of its first four games this season, but the Blue
Devils took control early as Bundgaard scored on a 12-yard run on their
second possession and Nick Ohman hit Ross Jones for a 13-yard touchdown with
44 seconds left in the quarter.
After a 14-yard punt on the Pointers next
possession, UW-Stout scored on its first play with a 30-yard pass from Ohman
to Dan Austin for a 21-0 lead. Pointers quarterback Scott Krause was
intercepted by Jordan Sinz on the next play and, just three plays later,
UW-Stout pushed the lead to 28-0 on a 20-yard run by Ohman.
The Pointers mounted a strong drive of 80 yards in
10 plays to cut the lead to 28-7, but the Blue Devils countered with a
47-yard field goal from Evan Larsen with 1:15 left in the second quarter for
a 31-7 halftime lead.
UW-Stout took its first possession of the second
half 43 yards in five plays, resulting in a 25-yard pass from Ohman to a
wide open Adam Moiles for a 37-7 lead.
UW-Stevens Point took control from that point as
Krause threw three touchdowns in the final 16:04 of the game, hitting Tony
Romano, Levi Massey and Kurt Kielblock for scores, but the Blue Devils
advantage was too big for a comeback.
Romano finished with six catches for a career-high
136 yards receiving as Krause was 25-for-46 passing for 269 yards, matching
his career highs for completions and attempts set last week at UW-La Crosse.
Ohman was 11-for-19 passing for 123 yards and
rushed for 62 yards on 12 carries for UW-Stout, which outgained the Pointers
361-332. |
