Krause and Romano Lead Pointers Over Platteville

Box Score

With only two chances left to throw to his favorite receiver, Scott Krause made sure he took every opportunity on Saturday as the senior quarterback connected with former high school teammate Tony Romano 13 times for 244 yards in a 55-21 victory at UW-Platteville on Saturday.

Krause, a senior from Waunakee, finished 28-for-37 for a career-high 427 yards and four touchdowns as the Pointers rolled up 628 yards of total offense. It was the fourth-highest offensive output in Pointer history and Romanos receiving total was the third-highest single game performance in school history.

UW-Stevens Point is now 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the conference, but didnt get any help in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title chase and is eliminated from title contention. The win was the Pointers fourth straight and their 13th straight over UW-Platteville. It also marks the fourth time this season UW-Stevens Point has scored 55 points or more in a game.

The Pointers opened the game quickly as Krause found Ross Adamczak for a 43-yard touchdown pass on just the sixth play of the game. The Pioneers blocked the extra point to keep the game 6-0.

UW-Platteville went 60 yards in 10 plays and scored on a two-yard run by Damian Droessler for a 7-6 lead. However, the Pointers scored fast again with Krause hitting Romano from 37 yards on the fifth play of the drive for a 12-7 lead.

After the first of LaRon Ragsdales two interceptions, Krause pushed the Pointers lead to 19-7 with a two-yard run on a third down play with 2:58 left in the first quarter. Cody Childs scored the first of his three touchdowns with a one-yard run with 24 seconds left in the first half to give UW-Stevens Point a 26-7 halftime lead.

Droessler finished off a six-play drive to open the second half with a three-yard touchdown run as the Pioneers cut the lead to 26-14. But again the Pointers used a quick drive as Krause had a 30-yard run and passed to Childs for 30 yards on the next play to set up a five-yard run by Childs and a 33-14 advantage.

UW-Plattevilles Kendall Syse intercepted Krause on the Pointers next possession and returned it to the five-yard line, setting up a three-yard pass from Brent Nelson to Jason Leonard, cutting the lead to 33-21.

However, Krause hit Romano for a 30-yard pass on third down to set up a 13-yard touchdown pass to Eric Reible, another Waunakee product, on the next play with 13 seconds left in the third quarter to give UW-Stevens Point a 40-21 lead. Krause finished 11-for-13 passing for 198 yards on third down after an eight-for-eight, 141-yard performance on third last week against UW-Whitewater. The Pointers were 13-for-18 on third down plays.

Ragsdales second interception set up a 22-yard touchdown from Krause to Adamczak and Krause hit Romano for a two-point conversion to make it 48-21. Childs added a four-yard touchdown run with 12 seconds left for the final scoring.

The Pointers limited UW-Platteville to 249 total yards and 205 yards on 23-for-52 passing. Reible had his second straight 90-yard rushing game with 90 yards on 16 carries.
