Krause Leads Five Pointers on All-WIAC Football First Team

Senior quarterback Scott Krause has been named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football Player of the Year to lead five UW-Stevens Point selections on the leagues first team.

Other first-team All-Conference selections were senior linebacker Nick Haffele, junior offensive tackle Cliff Ruland, junior defensive tackle Clint Bakken and senior defensive tackle Josh VanderVelden.

Second-team performers were freshman running back Cody Childs, junior wide receiver Kurt Kielblock, junior offensive guard Robb Kolodziej and sophomore cornerback LaRon Ragsdale. Earning honorable mention were junior tight end Ross Adamczak, junior wide receiver Tony Romano, sophomore linebacker Brett Maxwell and sophomore free safety Jared Flesch.

The Pointers finished 8-2 overall for their ninth eight-win season in school history. They finished second in the WIAC and led the league in both total offense and total defense.

Krause, a Waunakee native, was a first-team selection for the second straight year and led the NCAA Division III with 37 touchdown passes, marking the fourth-highest season total in WIAC history. He threw for 2,963 yards with just nine interceptions and completed a school-record 66.1 percent of his passes. Krause ranked second nationally in passing efficiency and fifth in total offense, while rushing for 322 yards and four touchdowns. He completed 74.0 percent of his passes and threw for 14 touchdowns over the final four games of the season.

Krause becomes the seventh UW-Stevens Point athlete to earn the Player of the Year award and the first player from a non-championship team to earn the award since UW-River Falls quarterback Adam Knowles in 1995. He is the second Pointer to earn Player of the Year honors in three years along with defensive lineman Paul Schmitt in 2001. Krause is the first Pointer quarterback to earn the award since Kirk Baumgartner in 1989.

Haffele, a Monroe native, led the Pointers in tackles for the third straight year with 91 tackles for his second straight first-team honor this season. He finished his career with 322 tackles to rank fifth on the schools all-time list. He led the team in tackles in a game 20 times during his career and had six tackles or more in 33 of his 36 career games.

Ruland, a Wonewoc native, was one of the main players up front to help the Pointers lead the league in total offense and set a school single-season scoring record at 39.4 points per game. UW-Stevens Point had four different players rush for at least 300 yards this season and averaged 163.1 yards rushing per game.

Bakken, a Boulder Junction native who attended Lakeland High School, was one of the leaders of a defense that led the WIAC in total defense, rushing defense and passing defense. A second-team selection last year, he had 36 tackles, seven tackles for loss and four sacks this season.

VanderVelden, a Kimberly native, played one year for the Pointers after transferring from Michigan Tech. He had 39 tackles, nine tackles for loss and five sacks. VanderVelden also became the first Pointers player since Clint Kriewaldt in 1997 to recover four fumbles in a season.

Childs, an Arlington native who attended Poynette High School, was one of three freshmen to earn any all-conference mention and led the team with 12 touchdowns. He led the Pointers in receptions with 61 catches for 639 yards.

Kielblock, who played at Iola-Scandinavia High School, totaled 36 catches for 633 yards and seven touchdowns to rank third on the team in all three categories. He was a second-team selection for the second straight year.

Kolodziej, who attended Stevens Point Area Senior High, started the first two games of the year at fullback before moving to offensive line. He played last year at Minnesota State-Mankato.

Ragsdale, a Milwaukee Madison High School graduate, played wide receiver last year, but moved to cornerback and shared the WIAC lead with five interceptions this year.

Adamczak, a Stevens Point Area Senior High graduate, had 28 catches for 497 yards and eight touchdowns. Romano, a Waunakee native, had 47 catches for team-highs 830 yards and nine touchdowns. Maxwell, a Spring Green native who attended River Valley High School, ranked second on the team with 70 tackles. Flesch, a Pulaski native, was fifth on the team with 42 tackles and broke up seven passes.
