Krause Leads Five
Pointers on All-WIAC Football First Team
Senior quarterback Scott Krause has been named the
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football Player of the Year to
lead five UW-Stevens Point selections on the league�s first team.
Other first-team All-Conference selections were
senior linebacker Nick Haffele, junior offensive tackle Cliff
Ruland, junior defensive tackle Clint Bakken and senior defensive
tackle Josh VanderVelden.
Second-team performers were freshman running back
Cody Childs, junior wide receiver Kurt Kielblock, junior
offensive guard Robb Kolodziej and sophomore cornerback LaRon
Ragsdale. Earning honorable mention were junior tight end Ross
Adamczak, junior wide receiver Tony Romano, sophomore linebacker
Brett Maxwell and sophomore free safety Jared Flesch.
The Pointers finished 8-2 overall for their ninth
eight-win season in school history. They finished second in the WIAC and led
the league in both total offense and total defense.
Krause, a Waunakee native, was a first-team
selection for the second straight year and led the NCAA Division III with 37
touchdown passes, marking the fourth-highest season total in WIAC history.
He threw for 2,963 yards with just nine interceptions and completed a
school-record 66.1 percent of his passes. Krause ranked second nationally in
passing efficiency and fifth in total offense, while rushing for 322 yards
and four touchdowns. He completed 74.0 percent of his passes and threw for
14 touchdowns over the final four games of the season.
Krause becomes the seventh UW-Stevens Point
athlete to earn the Player of the Year award and the first player from a
non-championship team to earn the award since UW-River Falls quarterback
Adam Knowles in 1995. He is the second Pointer to earn Player of the Year
honors in three years along with defensive lineman Paul Schmitt in 2001.
Krause is the first Pointer quarterback to earn the award since Kirk
Baumgartner in 1989.
Haffele, a Monroe native, led the Pointers in
tackles for the third straight year with 91 tackles for his second straight
first-team honor this season. He finished his career with 322 tackles to
rank fifth on the school�s all-time list. He led the team in tackles in a
game 20 times during his career and had six tackles or more in 33 of his 36
career games.
Ruland, a Wonewoc native, was one of the main
players up front to help the Pointers lead the league in total offense and
set a school single-season scoring record at 39.4 points per game.
UW-Stevens Point had four different players rush for at least 300 yards this
season and averaged 163.1 yards rushing per game.
Bakken, a Boulder Junction native who attended
Lakeland High School, was one of the leaders of a defense that led the WIAC
in total defense, rushing defense and passing defense. A second-team
selection last year, he had 36 tackles, seven tackles for loss and four
sacks this season.
VanderVelden, a Kimberly native, played one year
for the Pointers after transferring from Michigan Tech. He had 39 tackles,
nine tackles for loss and five sacks. VanderVelden also became the first
Pointers� player since Clint Kriewaldt in 1997 to recover four fumbles in a
season.
Childs, an Arlington native who attended Poynette
High School, was one of three freshmen to earn any all-conference mention
and led the team with 12 touchdowns. He led the Pointers in receptions with
61 catches for 639 yards.
Kielblock, who played at Iola-Scandinavia High
School, totaled 36 catches for 633 yards and seven touchdowns to rank third
on the team in all three categories. He was a second-team selection for the
second straight year.
Kolodziej, who attended Stevens Point Area Senior
High, started the first two games of the year at fullback before moving to
offensive line. He played last year at Minnesota State-Mankato.
Ragsdale, a Milwaukee Madison High School
graduate, played wide receiver last year, but moved to cornerback and shared
the WIAC lead with five interceptions this year.
Adamczak, a Stevens Point Area Senior High
graduate, had 28 catches for 497 yards and eight touchdowns. Romano, a
Waunakee native, had 47 catches for team-highs 830 yards and nine
touchdowns. Maxwell, a Spring Green native who attended River Valley High
School, ranked second on the team with 70 tackles. Flesch, a Pulaski native,
was fifth on the team with 42 tackles and broke up seven passes. |
