UW-Stevens Point Announces 2004 Football Schedule

A home non-conference contest against one of the West Regions top teams highlights the 2004 UW-Stevens Point football schedule, which includes two home games against teams that qualified for last seasons NCAA Division III playoffs.

UW-Stevens Point will open the season at home with the annual Spud Bowl game against Tri-State (Ind.) on Sept. 11 before taking on traditional power Linfield (Ore.) in a non-conference game on Sept. 18 at Goerke Field. The Wildcats lost their only game this past season to eventual national champion St. Johns (Minn.) 31-25 in the national quarterfinals. Linfield has an NCAA record 48 consecutive winning seasons.

This will be an exciting game for our fans and a great test for our team, said UW-Stevens Point coach John Miech, whose team will play at Linfield in McMinnville, Ore. in 2005. The game will add to an always challenging schedule of conference games. I also like the fact that we dont have a bye week this season.

UW-Stevens Points other non-conference game will be at Waldorf (Iowa) on Sept. 25 in Forest City, Iowa. Both Linfield and Waldorf are first-time opponents for the Pointers.

UW-Stevens Point will open its conference schedule with a homecoming tilt against defending Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion UW-La Crosse on Oct. 2.

Other home games are set for Oct. 23 against UW-Oshkosh and Nov. 6 against UW-Platteville.

The Pointers enter the 2004 season with a five-game winning streak after finishing 8-2 last season and 5-2 in the WIAC.
