Krause,
Flisakowski Lead Pointers to Another Comeback Win
Box
Score
Scott Krause threw a career-high four touchdown passes and ran for
two more for his seventh career fourth quarter comeback victory as
UW-Stevens Point rallied for a 38-27 victory over UW-River Falls Saturday
at Ramer Field in River Falls.
All four of Krauses touchdowns went to sophomore running back
Cory Flisakowski, who tied a school record with his four scoring catches.
The catches were Flisakowskis only four receptions of the game and were
the Pointers first four touchdowns as they rallied from an early 20-0
deficit. He is the sixth player in school history to catch four touchdowns
in a game and first since Bill Ott against UW-Platteville on Sept. 27,
1997.
The
Falcons scored on the first play of the game when quarterback Dustin
Vogelgesang hit Weeysama Kennedy with a play-action pass for 68 yards and
a touchdown. Vogelgesang and John Peterlik each added touchdown runs
before Krause found Flisakowski for their first touchdown from 66 yards to
cut the lead to 20-6.
After a nine-yard scoring pass from Krause to Flisakowski cut the
lead to 20-12 in the second quarter, the Pointers rallied late in the
third period with a 16-play, 85-yard drive as Krause hit an open
Flisakowski in the back of the end zone on a fourth-and-one play from the
Falcons 16-yard line. The pair hooked up again for a successful
two-point conversion, but a tripping penalty nullified the play and the
Pointers failed on the re-try to trail 20-18.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Vogelgesang hit Peterlik
with a screen pass on the right sideline that Peterlik cut up the middle
of the field to score from 28 yards and give UW-River Falls a 27-18 lead.
Just two plays later, Krause hit a wide open Flisakowski on a fly
pattern for a 68-yard score to pull the Pointers within 27-24 as they
missed their fourth extra point of the game.
The Pointer defense, which held UW-River Falls to just 93 total
yards in the second half, stopped the Falcons on their next possession
before UW-Stevens Point used a nine-play, 71-yard drive to take the lead
for the first time with 8:33 left.
Krause hit Kurt Kielblock for two screen passes on the drive,
including a 14-yard pass on a third-and-13 play at midfield. The junior
quarterback finished the drive with a one-yard sneak for the 31-27 lead.
UW-Stevens Point junior linebacker Nick Haffele, who finished with
a career-high 16 tackles and 11 solo stops, recovered a fumble at the
UW-River Falls 26-yard line just over a minute later. The Pointers took
advantage of the short field as Krause again hit Kielblock on a sideline
screen pass for 16 yards on third down to the four-yard line. Krause
finished the drive with another one-yard sneak with 4:25 left.
The win marked the Pointers first victory in River Falls since
1994. UW-Stevens Point improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the WIAC, while
UW-River Falls fell to 1-5 for the first time since 1971 and 0-3 in the
WIAC for the first time since 1977.\
