Point Falls Short in Loss to UW-La Crosse

UW-La Crosse rolled up 276
first half total yards and used several key defensive plays in the second
half to pull out a 31-25 victory over UW-Stevens Point Saturday at Goerke
Field in Stevens Point.
The Eagles had four
scoring drives of 11 plays or more and jumped out to a 24-13 halftime
advantage. UW-Stevens Point cut the lead to six with just under 10 minutes
left, but UW-La Crosse forced a fumble and interception on Pointer
possessions in the final 2:28 to seal the victory.
UW-La Crosse overcame 13
penalties for 85 yards, while UW-Stevens Point did not have a single
penalty for the game.
UW-La Crosse took the
opening kickoff 56 yards in 14 plays and scored on a 36-yard field goal by
Bryan Morris for a 3-0 lead. UW-Stevens Point�s Cory Flisakowski then
returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, tying a school
record for longest kickoff return held by Larry Holmes against
UW-Platteville in 1963.
On the Pointers� next
possession, UW-La Crosse defensive lineman Robert Lerner returned an
interception 46 yards for a score to put the Eagles ahead 10-7.
Ross Moline added a
three-yard touchdown to cap an 11-play, 80-yard drive for UW-La Crosse and
Kurt Kielblock scored on a 13-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to
pull the Pointers to within 17-13. However, UW-La Crosse had an 11-play,
73-yard drive and Matt Makaryk hit Matt Rizzo with a five-yard touchdown
pass on third down with 22 seconds left in the half.
Rizzo finished the day
with nine catches for 76 yards as Makaryk was 20-for-30 passing for 238
yards.
The Pointers used a
six-yard run by Jason VanderVelden to cut the lead to 24-19 in the third
quarter, but the Eagles scored on another lengthy drive in the final
minute of the quarter as Makaryk scrambled 28 yards on a fourth down play
to cap an 11-play, 65-yard drive.
Flisakowski caught a
27-yard touchdown from Scott Krause to pull the Pointers to within 31-25
with 9:56 left as the Pointers missed three of their four extra point
attempts. The Pointers were forced to punt with four minutes left and then
fumbled a punt and threw an interception on its final two possessions.
UW-Stevens Point finished with four turnovers for the game.
Flisakowski gained 106
yards on 15 carries and caught two passes for 51 yards to finish the day
with 262 all-purpose yards. Krause was 17-for-27 passing for 165 yards.
