Extra Point Costs Pointers in Loss to UW-Whitewater

Eric Salopek blocked Ricardo Vega's extra point attempt with 42
seconds remaining to help UW-Whitewater preserve a 28-27 victory over
previously undefeated UW-Stevens Point at Goerke Field.
Pointer quarterback Scott Krause had hooked up with Tony Romano on
a 39-yard touchdown pass to bring UW-Stevens Point within one point.
The loss drops the Pointers to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while the Warhawks improve to 4-1 and
1-1, respectively.
UW-Whitewater carried a 28-14 lead into the fourth quarter, but
Krause threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Chad Valentyne with 13:11
remaining to help bring the Pointers to within 28-21.
UW-Stevens Point had a chance to tie the game with two minutes
remaining, having marched from their own 20-yard line to the Whitewater
29. Following an illegal motion penalty that moved the ball back to the
34, Krause was intercepted by Dustin Hausherr at the Warhawk five yard
line.
Following three straight rushing plays, the Pointers forced a
UW-Whitewater punt. J.J. Chaudoir returned the punt 13 yards to the
Warhawk 39, setting up the Krause to Romano touchdown on the next play
from scrimmage.
Steve Tenhagen caught three touchdown passes for UW-Whitewater for
the second consecutive week to lead the Warhawks. Tenhagen caught seven
passes overall for 121 yards. He now has 10 touchdown receptions on the
season.
The Warhawks got on the scoreboard first on an eight-yard touchdown
reception by Tenhagen with 6:05 remaining in the first quarter. UW-Stevens
Point answered quickly as Kurt Kielblock scored on a 36-yard run with 3:26
left.
The Pointers took the lead on a one-yard touchdown run by Lance
Gast midway through the second quarter before UW-Whitewater tied the game
on Tenhagen's second touchdown catch, this time from 18 yards out.
UW-Stevens Point appeared ready to take the lead into halftime, but
the Pointers fumbled the ball at the Warhawk one-yard line with 1:42
remaining in the first half.
Whitewater jumped out to their two-touchdown lead in the third
quarter on Tenhagen's third score of the day, a 21-yarder from Reggie
Strauss, and a Chad Wurth one-yard run.
Krause
completed 20 of 35 passes for 251 yards with two touchdowns and a pair of
interceptions for the Pointers. Steve Jones had seven receptions for 81
yards.
Wurth carried 35 times for 103 yards for UW-Whitewater.
