Leads Pointer Rushing Attack in Victory Over UW-Stout

Lance Gast rushed for a career-high 141 yards on 19 carries to lead
a UW-Stevens Point rushing attack that gained 254 yards in a 34-24 victory
over UW-Stout Saturday at Goerke Field.
The Blue Devils entered the game ranked 14th in Division III in
rushing defense at 73 yards per game, but the Pointers averaged 5.2 yards
per carry and rushed for three touchdowns in the victory. UW-Stevens Point
entered the game ranked 23rd in the nation in total offense.
The Pointers got off to a quick start, scoring in just two plays
and taking a 7-0 lead 33 seconds into the game. Quarterback Scott Krause
hit Kurt Kielblock for a 20-yard screen pass and then rushed 42 yards on a
quarterback draw for a touchdown.
After a first quarter UW-Stout field goal, UW-Stevens Point used an
11-play, 82-yard drive capped by a Krause one-yard sneak for a 14-3 lead.
The Pointers scored twice in the final two minutes of the half as Krause
found Ross Adamczak for an 11-yard score and then, following a Blue
Devils� punt, Krause hit Steve Jones down the right sideline for a
32-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage for a 27-3
halftime lead. It marked just the third time in the past 20 games that the
Pointers have led at halftime.
UW-Stout quarterback Nick Ohman threw a 29-yard touchdown to Adam
Moiles with 20 seconds left in the third quarter and a 12-yard strike to
Brian Johnson early in the fourth quarter to bring the Blue Devils to
within 27-17, however, Gast broke free for a 39-yard touchdown with 5:35
left to give the Pointers a 34-17 cushion.
Ohman
passed for 253 yards and three touchdowns, completing 19 of 42 passes to
eight different receivers. Krause was eight-for-15 passing for 103 yards
with seven of his completions coming in the first half.
The Pointers are now 3-2 in the WIAC and tied with
UW-Platteville and UW-La Crosse for second place in the conference behind
4-1 UW-Eau Claire. UW-Stevens Point can clinch the WIAC automatic berth to
the Division III playoffs with wins over UW-Platteville and UW-Eau Claire
in its final two games.
