Pointers' Defense Shuts Down UW-River Falls for Victory

Box Score

A strong defensive effort helped lead the UW-Stevens Point football team to a 12-7 come from behind victory over UW-River Falls on Saturday at Goerke Field.

Picture (143x192, 17Kb)     The Pointers defense limited UW-River Falls wishbone attack to 143 yards rushing on 60 carries and just 61 yards of total offense in the second half. The Falcons entered the game averaging 297.5 rushing yards per game.

Quarterback Scott Krauses scrambling 31-yard touchdown run with 10:51 remaining in the fourth quarter put UW-Stevens Point up for good as the Pointers knocked off the WIACs lone remaining unbeaten team. On a second-and-one play, Krause dropped back to pass, broke numerous tackles and spun loose, running untouched over the final 30 yards for the score.

The victory moves the Pointers into a first-place tie in the WIAC at 2-1 while improving to 4-1 overall. River Falls fell to 2-1 in conference play and 2-3 overall.

Krauses run helped put UW-Stevens Point ahead 9-7 at the time and Ricardo Vega added a 30-yard field goal with 6:01 remaining to account for the final margin.

Field position played a key factor in the game as UW-Stevens Points average starting position in the second half was the Falcons 48 yard line, while UW-River Falls average start was from their own 17. The furthest penetration the Falcons had in the second half was their own 42-yard line, coming on their first possession following halftime.

UW-River Falls got on the scoreboard first as Dustin Vogelgesang hooked up with John Peterlik on a 61-yard touchdown pass with 1:53 remaining in the first half, as the Falcons took a 7-0 lead into halftime.

The Pointers finally broke into the scoring column with 8:43 remaining in the third quarter on a 41-yard field goal by Vega. It was the longest field goal made by a Pointer since Fred Galecke converted on a 41-yarder in the 1997 season.

Nick Haffele recoreded 13 tackles on the day to lead the Pointer defensive effort, including 10 solo tackles and five tackles for loss.

Krause completed just eight of 31 passes for 141 yards on the afternoon while throwing four interceptions. Lance Gast, starting in place of the injured Kurt Kielblock, rushed for 76 yards on 17 carries for UW-Stevens Point.

Vogelgesang threw for 132 yards in the game, which was 21 more total yards than UW-River Falls had thrown for in its first four games of the season combined.
