Pointers
Sweep Season Series From UW-Platteville
Box
Score
Ross Adamczak caught a 90-yard touchdown pass from Scott Krause
with 4:23 remaining in the second quarter to give UW-Stevens Point the
lead for good as the Pointers took sole possession of second place in the
WIAC with a 28-14 victory over UW-Platteville.
The completion was the second longest in Pointer history behind a
94-yard reception from Rip Flippo to Barry Rose on Oct. 26, 1991 against
Platteville.
It was the second win of the season for UW-Stevens Point over the
Pioneers. The Pointers defeated Platteville earlier in the season 51-13 in
a non-conference matchup. It is the first time the Pointers have beaten a
team twice in the same season since defeating UW-Oshkosh twice in 1899.
UW-Stevens Point jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter
behind a pair of three-yard touchdown runs by Lance Gast. The Pointers
controlled the clock in the opening quarter, rushing on all 21 of its
plays from scrimmage.
UW-Platteville got to within 14-6 on a 10-yard touchdown pass from
Tom Stetzer to Matt Kent. The Pioneers then tied the game with 5:29
remaining in the second quarter on a one-yard run by John Adler and the
ensuing two-point conversion catch by Reggie Davis.
However, the Pointers responded just two plays later on the
Adamczak touchdown reception.
UW-Stevens Point started off its initial possession of the second
half in excellent field possession following an interception by David
Rogers at the Platteville 30-yard line.
Krause culminated an eight-play drive with a one-yard touchdown run
to finish off the scoring.
Platteville failed to get any closer the rest of the game as the
Pointer defense forced four second half turnovers including interceptions
by Jonah Roth and Matt Stoehr in the end zone.
The victory improves the Pointers to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the
WIAC and sets up a matchup with first place UW-Eau Claire on Saturday at
Goerke Field. A UW-Stevens Point victory would ensure a share of the
conference title and an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III
playoffs.
