Fall to UW-Oshkosh 38-31 for Second Straight Year

UW-Stevens Point fell into a six-way tie for second place in the
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, falling to UW-Oshkosh by a
38-31 score for the second straight year.
Last year�s Titans� victory in Stevens Point snapped a 16-game
losing streak against the Pointers. The win on Saturday marked the first
time UW-Oshkosh has beaten the Pointers in consecutive years since
1975-76.
Alan Beversdorf completed 25 of 33 passes for 300 yards and four
touchdowns to lead the Titans. He completed six passes for 122 yards to
Shannon King, who was on the receiving end of a pair of fourth quarter
touchdowns. Steve Wagner also caught 10 passes for 100 yards � all in
the first three quarters.
UW-Oshkosh led 17-14 at halftime and took a 24-14 lead on a 73-yard
run by Matt Kimmler early in the third quarter. The Pointers rallied on an
eight-yard run by Kurt Kielbock and a 42-yard field goal by Ricardo Vega
to tie the game at 24-24 after three quarters.
The Titans regained the lead on a 14-yard pass from Beversdorf to
King with 12:15 remaining. The Pointers were driving with under five
minutes remaining when Jason VanderVelden fumbled at the Titans� 35-yard
line.
UW-Oshkosh punted on its next possession, but the Pointers were
stopped on a fourth-and-one play at the Titans� 46-yard line with 2:40
left. Three plays later, Beversdorf found King for a 48-yard touchdown to
give the Titans a 38-24 lead. It was the first points UW-Stevens Point has
allowed in the final 12 minutes of any game this season.
The Pointers used just 59 seconds, traveling 69 yards in three
plays to pull within one touchdown. Scott Krause hit Kielblock for a
46-yard pass to the 13-yard line and then found Tony Romano for a 13-yard
touchdown with 1:21 left.
Vega�s onside kick attempt went out of bounds and the Titans ran
out the clock for the victory.
UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stevens Point are now part of a six-way tie for
second place in the WIAC with 2-2 records. UW-Eau Claire leads the league
at 3-1.
Both teams had outstanding offensive efforts as the Pointers
totaled 427 yards and UW-Oshkosh had 415 yards, which was the highest
total allowed by UW-Stevens Point this season. Kimmler rushed for a
career-high 141 yards on 31 carries to lead the Titans.
Krause was 17-for-31 passing for 226 yards and also rushed for 65
yards, including a 45-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
VanderVelden rushed for 92 yards for the Pointers.
