Pointers Fall to UW-Oshkosh 38-31 for Second Straight Year

Box Score

UW-Stevens Point fell into a six-way tie for second place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, falling to UW-Oshkosh by a 38-31 score for the second straight year.

Last years Titans victory in Stevens Point snapped a 16-game losing streak against the Pointers. The win on Saturday marked the first time UW-Oshkosh has beaten the Pointers in consecutive years since 1975-76.

Alan Beversdorf completed 25 of 33 passes for 300 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Titans. He completed six passes for 122 yards to Shannon King, who was on the receiving end of a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns. Steve Wagner also caught 10 passes for 100 yards all in the first three quarters.

UW-Oshkosh led 17-14 at halftime and took a 24-14 lead on a 73-yard run by Matt Kimmler early in the third quarter. The Pointers rallied on an eight-yard run by Kurt Kielbock and a 42-yard field goal by Ricardo Vega to tie the game at 24-24 after three quarters.

The Titans regained the lead on a 14-yard pass from Beversdorf to King with 12:15 remaining. The Pointers were driving with under five minutes remaining when Jason VanderVelden fumbled at the Titans 35-yard line.

UW-Oshkosh punted on its next possession, but the Pointers were stopped on a fourth-and-one play at the Titans 46-yard line with 2:40 left. Three plays later, Beversdorf found King for a 48-yard touchdown to give the Titans a 38-24 lead. It was the first points UW-Stevens Point has allowed in the final 12 minutes of any game this season.

The Pointers used just 59 seconds, traveling 69 yards in three plays to pull within one touchdown. Scott Krause hit Kielblock for a 46-yard pass to the 13-yard line and then found Tony Romano for a 13-yard touchdown with 1:21 left.

Vegas onside kick attempt went out of bounds and the Titans ran out the clock for the victory.

UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stevens Point are now part of a six-way tie for second place in the WIAC with 2-2 records. UW-Eau Claire leads the league at 3-1.

Both teams had outstanding offensive efforts as the Pointers totaled 427 yards and UW-Oshkosh had 415 yards, which was the highest total allowed by UW-Stevens Point this season. Kimmler rushed for a career-high 141 yards on 31 carries to lead the Titans.

Krause was 17-for-31 passing for 226 yards and also rushed for 65 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. VanderVelden rushed for 92 yards for the Pointers.
