Baseball Team Adds
Seven Incoming Freshmen
Fresh off an appearance in the NCAA Division III
College World Series, the UW-Stevens Point baseball team had seven high
school seniors, including four all-state selections, inform head coach Pat
Bloom of their intentions to attend the school in the fall and play for the
Pointers.
Leading the all-state picks was first-team utility
player Brad Archambeau from Watertown, who starred as both a pitcher
and outfielder. He was a two-time first-team all-conference player and
played in the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association all-star classic. A
lefthanded pitcher and hitter, Archambeau was 6-0 with a 0.97 ERA and hit
.339 with 12 RBI�s. Watertown also won two Little Ten Conference titles.
Matt Kabele from Portage was the winning
pitcher in the WIAA Division 2 state title game this spring and also helped
his team to last week�s Class AA state Legion tournament. Also a standout
shortstop, he hit .440 with 17 RBI�s this spring and was 9-1 with two saves
and a 1.23 ERA as a pitcher. A three-time all-conference selection, Kabele
earned second-team all-state honors and played in the WBCA all-star classic.
Nick Loppnow, an outfielder from
Oconomowoc, was a second-team all-state selection and a two-time
all-conference performer. He played in the WBCA all-star classic and hit
.408 with 16 RBI�s this spring.
Lucas Hoeschele, a lefthanded pitcher from
Baraboo, was also a second-team all-state performer and helped his team
reach the Class AA state Legion tournament.
Greg Gibson, a pitcher and third baseman
from Appleton Xavier went 7-1 with a 1.06 ERA and hit .347 with 21 RBI�s
this spring while leading Xavier to a 21-1 record. Gibson was the Valley 8
Conference Player of the Year and a two-time all-conference selection.
Gibson also won two games at last week�s Class AAA state American Legion
tournament as Appleton finished runner-up and advanced to the Great Lakes
Regional in Evansville, Ind.
Devin Bressers, a righthanded pitcher from
Portage, earned victories in both the WIAA state tournament and Class AA
state Legion tournament. A two-time all-conference performer, he was 9-1
with a 2.66 ERA this spring.
Luke Kostreva, a first baseman from Oconto
Falls, was a three-time all-conference performer and hit .296 in Legion
baseball this summer.
Archambeau, Kabele, Hoeschele and Gibson will also
participate in the Wisconsin American Legion all-star game at Miller Park on
August 20 along with current Pointer Tyler Lorenz, who played this summer
with the Marinette Legion. |
