Mitchler Named Second-Team Academic All-American
UW-Stevens Point senior Jenna Mitchler
earned second-team Academic All-American honors in track and field and
cross country, giving the school four selections during the past month
on the teams selected by the
College Sports Information Directors of America and ESPN The Magazine.
It is Mitchlers first Academic All-American award as she joins baseball
player Chuck Brehm, wrestler Mike Hayes and mens swimmer Garth Newport
this spring to give UW-Stevens Point 31 winners in school history,
including 28 over the past seven years. The 45-member teams are selected
among all NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA athletes in each
sport.
Mitchler is the third UW-Stevens Point womens track and field athlete
to earn the Academic All-American honor, joining Jody Butkowski (2002
and 2003) and Leah Juno (2001).
Mitchler was the only Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
athlete on either the first or second team. The Kaukauna native carries
a 3.59 grade point average with an education major and was the NCAA
Division III indoor national champion in the 800-meter run in 2005.
Mitchler, who was UW-Stevens Points female athlete of the year in an
individual sport the past two years, was a seven-time All-American in
track and field and two-time All-American finisher in cross country,
leading the team to third place finishes in both sports. She also was
the WIAC indoor track and field athlete of the meet in 2005. In addition
to her athletics success, she was president of UW-Stevens Points
student athlete advisory committee this past year.
