UW-Stevens Point fell
one game short of qualifying for the NCAA Division III World
Series for the second time in school history after suffering a 7-3
loss to UW-Whitewater in the title game of the NCAA regional on
Sunday in Whitewater.
The Pointers lost their
first game of the weekend 5-3 to St. Scholastica, but battled back
with a 2-0 win over St. Thomas on Friday and an 18-3 win over St.
Scholastica and 13-5 triumph over UW-Whitewater on Saturday to
reach the title game.
UW-Stevens Point
finished with a school record 38 victories and had the
fifth-highest home run total in Division III history with 93
round-trippers for the season.
Matt Polomis
(Wausaukee, WI) pitched seven scoreless innings in the win over
St. Thomas and also had five hits on the weekend to earn
all-tournament honors. He was joined by Jake Frombach (Stratford,
WI), Tim Schlosser (Oconomowoc, WI), Ryan Jones (Eau Claire, WI)
and Steve Wiczek (Stevens Point, WI). Kevin Pankow (Oconomowoc,
WI) also had an outstanding weekend, retiring 17 of 18 batters
faced with one hit batter. Jordan Zimmermann (Auburndale, WI)
pitched eight innings, allowing five hits and no earned runs in
the win over St. Scholastica.

Division III Outdoor Championships (at Waverly, Iowa)

The Pointers posted a
share of national qualifying performances over the weekend to
strengthen their squads entering this weekend�s NCAA Division III
outdoor championships at Waverly, Iowa. The meet runs from
Thursday through Saturday. Official entries are announced on
Monday night.
UW-Stevens Point
competed at the North Central Invitational on Friday and got an
automatic qualifying time in the 800-meter run from Jenna Mitchler
(Kaukauna, WI), who won the event in 2:11.16 and now owns the
nation�s second-best time in the 800 and 1500-meters. Marie
Burrows (Menomonee Falls, WI) earned a spot at nationals in the
400-meter dash by winning the event in 56.84 seconds.
Other national
qualifiers for the women�s team will likely be Liz Goergen (Apple
Valley, MN) in both hurdles events, Megan Craig (Bangor, WI) in
the 800 and 1500-meter runs, Teresa Stanley (Whitewater, WI) in
the 3000-meter steeplechase and Julia Slabosheski (Princeton, WI)
in the discus. The 1600-meter relay team of Burrows, Mitchler,
Goergen and Katie Simo (Appleton, WI) will also be invited.
The men�s team got a
provisional qualifying performance in the decathlon this weekend
from Kyle Steiner (Grafton, WI), who had a score of 6,466 at the
Augustana Invitational. Mark LaLonde (Park Falls, WI) has one of
the nation�s top times in the 3000-meter steeplechase and will
also compete in the 5000-meter runs. Mitch Ellis (Three Lakes, WI)
will likely be invited in the high jump.
