BASEBALL (30-6 overall, 17-3 WIAC)

A showdown for the WIAC championship is set for this weekend at University Field in Stevens Point as the Pointers host UW-Whitewater in a four-game series between the top two teams in the conference standings. The Warhawks enter the weekend ranked No. 1 in the country and boasting an 18-2 conference record while UW-Stevens Point is 17-3 and ranked ninth in the nation.

The Pointers need three victories to clinch the league title and UW-Whitewater needs two wins. The doubleheaders are set for 1 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday. The conference champion receives the top seed for the WIAC tournament May 13-14 in Wisconsin Rapids.

The weekend series features two high-powered offenses as UW-Stevens Point leads Division III with a single-season school record 67 home runs and ranks sixth in the country in scoring. UW-Whitewater leads the nation in scoring and is second in batting average.

The Pointers put themselves in position for the title by sweeping a four-game series from UW-Superior over the weekend. UW-Stevens Point posted its first two shutouts of the year on Saturday with 6-0 and 5-0 wins and then delivered 5-3 and 27-0 wins on Sunday. The wins gave the Pointers their fifth 30-win season, all coming in the last nine years. Earlier in the week, the Pointers lost to Division I Illinois-Chicago 20-5.

J.C. Reinke (Bonduel, WI) and Jordan Zimmermann (Auburndale, WI) both finished with complete game shutouts on Saturday. Stewart Larsen (Sturgeon Bay, WI) had a memorable first career start on Sunday, finishing five-for-six with six RBI�s. Steve Wiczek (Stevens Point, WI) hit .524 for the week (11-for-21) with seven RBI�s. Chuck Brehm (Spencer, WI) hit .421 (8-for-19) with eight RBI�s.

   UW-Stevens Point takes part in the conference tournament this weekend in Whitewater with the winner earning an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III tournament.

   The Pointers are the fifth seed in the tournament and meet fourth-seeded UW-Superior in the opening game on Friday at 1 p.m. UW-Eau Claire is the top seed and faces either ninth-seeded UW-Whitewater or eighth-seeded UW-Platteville. On the other side of the bracket, UW-Oshkosh is the second seed and plays seventh-seeded UW-La Crosse while third-seeded UW-Stout plays sixth-seeded UW-River Falls.

   UW-Stevens Point entered the week ranked 25th in the country and went 2-3 in the WIAC cluster in River Falls over the weekend. The Pointers beat UW-Superior 6-2 and lost to UW-Eau Claire 1-0 on Saturday. They opened Sunday by defeating UW-La Crosse 3-0, but then lost to UW-Stout 2-0 and UW-River Falls 6-2.

Laura Zierler (Kaukauna, WI) continued her hot hitting by batting .412 (7-for-17) with four RBI�s for the weekend. Korryn Brooks (Stevens Point, WI) and Stephanie Anderson (Milwaukee, WI) each hit .400 (6-for-15) over the five games.

Kelly Jablonski (Stevens Point, WI) had a streak of 47 2/3 straight innings without allowing an earned run snapped in the loss to UW-Stout. She picked up the win over UW-Superior, while Anderson threw a five-hit shutout against UW-La Crosse.

 

TRACK AND FIELD

May 6-7 � WIAC Outdoor Championships (at La Crosse)

 The Pointers had their final tune-up for this weekend�s WIAC outdoor championships by splitting the squad three ways over the weekend. Several of the top runners participated in the Drake Relays, while the men�s team competed at the Loras Invitational and the women�s team placed fifth of seven teams at the UW-La Crosse Classic.

 Both teams will be in La Crosse this weekend for the WIAC championships. Events begin at noon on Friday and continue on Saturday with field events at 10 a.m. and running finals at noon.

 Mark LaLonde (Park Falls, WI) ran the third-fastest 5,000-meter run in the NCAA Division III this season at the Drake Relays on Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa. LaLonde posted an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:32.63 to place 13th in the field over 20 runners that were primarily from Division I schools.

 The women�s 1600-meter relay team of Katie Simo (Appleton, WI), Liz Goergen (Apple Valley, MN), Jenna Mitchler (Kaukauna, WI) and Marie Burrows (Menomonee Falls, WI) had an NCAA provisional time of 3:55.48 while placing 13th of 33 teams. The men�s sprint medley relay of Pat Leonard (Chicago, IL), Bryan Buechel (New Holstein, WI), Nick Ver Duin (Howards Grove, WI) and Matt Legel (Crystal Lake, IL) that was sixth of 24 teams in 3:27.23. The women�s sprint medley team of Lisa Anderson (Porterfield, WI), Simo, Burrows and Mitchler was fifth of 29 teams in 4:02.32.

 Also, the women�s team placed fifth of seven teams at the UW-La Crosse Classic on Saturday. Jessica Beaulieu (Eau Claire, WI) had the Pointers� top performance with a second place in the hammer throw at 146 feet.

 At Loras, the men achieved most of their success in the 400-meter hurdles as Paul Schliepp (Redgranite, WI) was second in 56.01 seconds and Eric Knaebe (West Bend, WI) was third in 56.09 seconds. Cory Baumann (Marathon, WI) was third in the 1500-meter run at 4:05.74 and Ryan Shepard (Cornell, WI) was third in the high jump at six feet, four inches.
