Players of the Week April 23rd � April 30th

Baseball � Position Player 

Ryan Byrnes (Beaver Dam, WI) � The junior hit seven-for-14 (.500) with five runs scored, two doubles, and four RBI�s in four games this week for the Pointers.  Byrnes� six-for-seven (.857) hitting effort on Tuesday against 18th-ranked Ripon snapped Ripon�s 17-game win streak.  Byrnes� was a perfect four-for-four in the second game of the doubleheader with one double, three runs scored and two RBI�s.

Baseball - Pitcher

Mike Thrun (Franklin, WI) � The sophomore left-hander had a quality pitching performance to help the Pointers sweep 18th-ranked Ripon, snapping Ripon�s 17-game win streak.  Thrun pitched a career-high eight innings in his second career start in the opener, and took a shutout into the ninth inning before a leadoff home run.  Thrun scattered six hits, allowed one earned run and struck out four batters in the 4-1 victory.

Softball � Position Player

Jackie Berger (Bonduel, WI) - The junior rightfielder led the Pointers to a 5-1 overall record this week and 3-1 in the WIAC.  Berger was 11-for-23 (.478) from the plate with five runs scored, three RBI�s, one double, and one stolen base.  In Wednesday�s non-conference matchup with Edgewood, Berger hit five-for-nine with two runs scored and one RBI.  In Saturday�s second game against UW-Stout, Berger tied the game with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the third inning. 

Softball � Pitcher

Ashley Tobalsky (Kenosha, WI/Tremper) - The freshman pitched a five-hit shutout in the opening game and then closed out the second game for a save as the UW-Stevens Point softball team took two games from UW-Stout on Saturday.  She also had a complete game shutout of UW-Oshkosh earlier in the week.  For the week, Tobalsky was 3-0 with two shutouts and one save as the Pointers went 5-1.  Tobalsky pitched 22 and two-thirds innings, scattering 17 hits, giving up one earned run (0.31 ERA), striking out 23 batters and walking four.

Men�s Track Events

1600-Meter Relay Team (Pat Leonard � Chicago, IL/Brother Rice, Jeremy Schwartz - Watertown, Adam Baumann - Marathon, Nick Ver Duin � Howards Grove) � The relay team posted a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:14.15.  Their effort earned them seventh place overall at the Drake Relays on Friday and Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.

Women�s Track Events

Jenna Mitchler (Kaukauna, WI) � The senior posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the women�s 1500-meter run to highlight the UW-Stevens Point track and field team�s performance at the Drake Relays on Friday and Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.  Mitchler posted a time of 4:33.07 to place ninth of 12 competitors in a race that featured 10 Division I entrants. She also was part of the distance medley relay squad that placed third of 15 teams.

Distance Medley Relay Team (Jenna Mitchler -Kaukauna, WI, Marie Burrows � Menomonee Falls, WI, Teresa Stanley - Whitewater, WI,  Megan Craig � Bangor, WI) � The team placed third of 15 teams at the Drake Relays on Friday and Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.  The team finished the relay in a time of 11:54.53.

Women�s Field Events

Beth Richter (Green Bay, WI/Preble) � The junior had two top-five finishes on Saturday at the Loras Open in Dubuque, Iowa.  Richter placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, two inches, which was a personal record.  Richter placed second in the javelin with a throw of 108 feet, four inches.

Mary Robus (Auburndale, WI) � The sophomore set a personal record in the hammer throw on Saturday at the Loras Open in Dubuque, Iowa.  Robus took 20th place with a throw of 99 feet, eight inches, which was 13 feet longer than her best previous throw.
