UW-Stevens Point closes out the regular season with six games this week, including four home games against UW-Platteville over the weekend. The Pointers have clinched at least the third seed in the upcoming conference tournament after splitting a four-game series with UW-Whitewater over the weekend. UW-Stevens Point and UW-Oshkosh will play in the first round of the tournament on May 14 in Whitewater.

The Pointers lost the first game to UW-Whitewater 1-0 in 10 innings before rebounding for a 4-2 second game win that snapped the Warhawks� 15-game winning streak. On Sunday, they lost to the Warhawks 4-3 and posted a 10-3 victory.

Earlier in the week, the Pointers swept a non-conference doubleheader from Cardinal Stritch by 7-3 and 21-1 scores.

Matt Polomis (Wausaukee, WI) had a big week for the Pointers with 10 hits in 23 at-bats, including four doubles and six RBI�s. Mike Hall (Manitowoc, WI) was seven-for-20 for the week and Nat Richter (Green Bay, WI) was six-for-18. Matt Peetz (Spring Green, WI) had his hitting streak stopped at 21 straight games in Saturday�s first game.

Against Cardinal Stritch, Greg Treml (Stevens Point, WI) and Matt Peterson (Plymouth, WI) homered in each game of the sweep.

 

SOFTBALL (20-21 overall, 5-9 WIAC)

The Pointers finished off a busy season with a doubleheader sweep of Milwaukee School of Engineering and a pair of losses in the WIAC tournament last week. UW-Stevens Point opened its season on March 21 and played 41 games in its 41-day season, finishing 20-21 overall for its 11th straight season with 20 victories.

The Pointers swept M.S.O.E. 4-0 and 5-1 as Kelly Schmidt (Wrightstown, WI) threw a complete game shutout in the opener and Amanda Maule (Tomahawk, WI) posted 11 strikeouts with no walks in the second game.

UW-Stevens Point lost to UW-Superior 5-2 in the opening round of the conference tournament and then dropped a 2-0 decision to UW-La Crosse in an elimination game. UW-Superior defeated UW-Whitewater 6-0 in the championship game on Saturday to earn an NCAA Division III tournament berth.

On Monday, the Pointers closed out the WIAC cluster with wins over UW-La Crosse 7-3 and UW-River Falls 2-1.

Rebekah Bauer (Stevens Point, WI) went five-for-11 over the final four games and led the team with a .380 average and 35 RBI�s. She also set a single-season school record with 25 extra-base hits. Liz Boettcher (New Berlin, WI) and Jessica Cook (Reedsburg, WI) were each three-for-nine over the last four games last week.

 

TRACK AND FIELD

May 7-8 � WIAC Outdoor Championships (at Eau Claire)

UW-Stevens Point competed on Friday at the WIAC qualifier in La Crosse in its final preparation for this weekend�s WIAC outdoor championships in Eau Claire.

No team scores were kept in the meet, but the Pointers had four women�s champions and three men�s champions. Becky Clarke (Antioch, IL) won the long jump at 16 feet, seven inches and the javelin at 126 feet, three inches. Megan Craig (Bangor, WI) had an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:15.79 in winning the 800-meter run. Marie Burrows (Menomonee Falls, WI) claimed the 200-meter dash in 26.07 seconds.

Also for the women, Ashleigh Potuznik (Baraboo, WI) bettered her previous provisional time in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a second place finish in 11:12.25.

On the men�s side, Matt Legel (Crystal Lake, IL) won the 800-meter run in 1:53.78 and Mark Wierzba (Rosholt, WI) captured the javelin in 178 feet, one inch. The 4x100 relay also won in 42.50 seconds.
