UW-Stevens Point posted a pair of
victories to advance to the NCAA Division III �Sweet 16� for the third time
in seven years. The Pointers beat Benedictine (Ill.) 84-58 in the opening
round before avenging a second round loss from last year with a 66-55 win at
Gustavus Adolphus.
UW-Stevens Point will travel to
Tacoma, Wash. for the NCAA Division III sectional and will play host Puget
Sound on Friday night at 10 p.m. Central. The games will be broadcast on
97.9 FM WSPT. Lawrence and Sul Ross State (Texas) meet in the other game
with the winners playing Saturday for a trip to the final four.
Jason Kalsow (Huntley, IL) and
Nick Bennett (Stevens Point, WI) each scored 14 points during a big second
half for the Pointers in the win at Gustavus Adolphus. UW-Stevens Point
trailed 25-22 at halftime, but shot 65.2 percent in the second half and used
a 9-0 run over a span of 4:41 in the final seven minutes to pull away for
the win. Kalsow finished with 19 points and Bennett had 17 points, while
setting a school record with 70 three-pointers for the season.
In the opening round, the
Pointers jumped on Benedictine by taking a 46-29 halftime lead as Bennett
scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the first half. Kalsow and Jon Krull
(Marshall, WI) each added 10 points for the Pointers.

The Pointers advanced to the NCAA
Division III �Sweet 16� after opening the tournament with an 84-66 victory
over Ripon on Saturday at Berg Gym. UW-Stevens Point will host the sectional
for the second time in three years and will play the games in the Quandt
Fieldhouse.
The Pointers face a rematch from
the 2002 second round in Friday�s sectional opener against Washington (Mo.)
at 7 p.m. The last six tournaments that the Bears have played a WIAC team
the winner went on to claim the national championship. Hardin-Simmons
(Texas) and Eastern Mennonite (Va.) will play the first game on Friday.
UW-Stevens Point had a first
round bye and outlasted Ripon in the second round to advance to the
sectional. The Pointers never trailed in the game, but held under a 10-point
lead for much of the game before a decisive 15-4 run gave them a 67-52 lead
with 8:29 left.
Amanda Nechuta (Mosinee, WI) had
20 points and Amy Scott (Rosholt, WI) had 20 points for the Pointers, who
shot 56.7 percent for the game. Cassandra Schultz (Hartford, WI) added 16
points and seven assists.

The Pointers finished the season
with a 13-12-3 overall record for their eighth straight winning season after
losing to UW-River Falls 4-1 in the NCHA semifinals on Friday.
UW-Stevens Point outshot the
Falcons 34-31 and trailed just 1-0 entering the third period before UW-River
Falls scored two early goals in the period. Brett Coburn (Addison, IL)
scored with 5:34 left for the Pointers� only goal and UW-Stevens Point was
unable to convert another score despite holding a 16-8 advantage in shots in
the third period. UW-River Falls added an empty net goal to finish the
scoring.
WOMEN�S HOCKEY (17-6-4 overall,
11-4-1 NCHA)
NCAA Division III Tournament

The Pointers received their
first-ever bid to the NCAA Division III tournament and will open play on
Saturday in a quarterfinal game at Gustavus Adolphus. The winner will
advance to the Division III Women�s Frozen Four the following weekend at a
site to be determined.
UW-Stevens Point won the NCHA
playoff title on Feb. 29, but had to wait a full week to see if it would be
granted an at-large berth to the field. The Pointers earned their first bid
despite a 63-12-6 combined record over the past three seasons.
The Pointers and Gusties played
twice this season, splitting a series on Nov. 14-15 in St. Peter, Minn.
Gustavus Adolphus won 3-2 the first night before the Pointers posted a 6-3
win the following night.

UW-Stevens Point has six women
taking part in this weekend�s NCAA Division III championships, which will be
held Thursday through Saturday in St. Peters, Mo.
Representing the Pointers at the
national meet will be Alissa Bartz (Beloit, WI), Lindsay Correll (Aurora,
IL), Jerica Crook (Spring Green, WI), Kelsey Crunstedt (Savage, MN), Erica
Janssen (Oshkosh, WI) and Jacci Menzel (Stevens Point, WI).
The Pointers will have five
individuals participating in the men�s championships March 18-20. Alex
Anderson (La Crosse, WI), Aaron Marshall (Cambridge, MN), Garth Newport
(Berlin, WI) and Matt Sievers (Proctor, MN) will swim at nationals and diver
Chad Pettis (Eau Claire, WI) has also been selected.

The Pointers had no individual
champions, but 10 runner-up finishes helped the men�s and women�s teams both
finish third at the WIAC championships over the weekend in Menomonie.
UW-Stevens Point will compete at the indoor nationals on Friday and Saturday
in Whitewater.
The women had 121 points as
UW-La Crosse won the meet with 159.5 and UW-Oshkosh was second with 145
points. The Pointer men had 88 points with UW-La Crosse winning the team
title with 210.8 and UW-Whitewater finishing second with 180 points.
Marie Burrows (Menomonee
Falls, WI) and Leah Herlache (Green Bay, WI) each had a pair of runner-up
performances for the women�s team. Burrows was second in the 200-meter dash
in 26.06 seconds and the 400-meter dash in 58.14 seconds. Herlache was
second in the 1500-meter run in 4:41.50 and the 3000-meter run in 10:29.86.
Jenna Mitchler (Kaukauna, WI)
was second in the 800-meter run in 2:16.72 and Stephanie Renk (Glenbeulah,
WI) was second in the pentathlon with 3,029 points. The distance medley
relay was also second in 12:.03.30.
On the men�s side, Andrew
Schliepp (Redgranite, WI) was second in the 55-meter hurdles at 7.72 seconds
and Mitch Ellis (Three Lakes, WI) was runner-up in the high jump at six
feet, 8.75 inches. The distance medley relay was second in 10:31.01.
WRESTLING (9-3 overall, 6-0 WIAC)

The Pointers had three repeat
All-American performers to finish in the top 10 for the second straight year
at the NCAA Division III championships with a ninth place finish at the
national meet in Dubuque, Iowa.
Yan White (Antigo, WI) placed
runner-up at 197 pounds for the second straight year and made his third
straight appearance in the national finals.
White finished the season
with a 20-3 record, dropping all three matches to Wartburg�s Akeem Carter,
including a 4-2 decision in the national title match. White joined Perry
Miller as the only Pointers ever to reach three straight championship
matches after pinning Robert Cuffie of Brockport State (N.Y.) in the
semifinals in 4:59.
Cody Koenig (Underwood, IA),
the defending national champion at 174 pounds, lost to Augsburg�s Joe Moon
for the second time this season by a 4-2 decision in the semifinals. After
beating Jason Shivak of Delaware Valley (Penn.) 6-5 in a wrestleback, he
lost to Mark Hawald of John Carroll (Ohio) 4-2 in the third place match to
finish the season 32-4 overall.
Brady Holtz (Oconto Falls, WI)
earned his second straight All-American honor at 133 pounds by finishing
sixth overall. The senior was pinned by Mike Troast of York (Penn.) in 2:27
in his final match.
Joel Burdick (Racine, WI) dropped
both of his matches in his first appearance at nationals at 141 pounds.
