UW-Stevens Point beat Marian 9-3 and 10-4 on Tuesday and then topped Northland 3-1 in a single non-conference game on Friday. The Pointers, who currently have their highest national ranking in school history at No. 3, were rained out on Wednesday and Thursday. Against Marian, Ryan Jones (Eau Claire, WI) opened the doubleheader with five straight hits, including two home runs after earning NCAA Division III Hitter of the Week honors the previous week. Josh Blaha (Two Rivers, WI) threw six innings for the win in the opening game and Eric Schlender (Baraboo, WI) did not allow an earned run in six innings for the victory in the second game. Jones drove in the winning run against Northland with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jeff Pieper (Wausau, WI) threw 8 2/3 innings and allowed just one run. Jared Szews (Birnamwood, WI) recorded the final out for his sixth save. This week, the Pointers face a tough stretch with eight games in five days - all on the road. It opens with two games at 28th-ranked UW-Whitewater on Wednesday and continues Thursday at St. Norbert and over the weekend at UW-La Crosse. The Pointers will be home for non-conference games Tuesday and Wednesday before taking part in the second WIAC cluster with five conference games this weekend in Menomonie. Monday�s scheduled games with St. Norbert have been postponed with no make-up date set. UW-Stevens Point split a doubleheader with UW-Oshkosh last week, winning 9-1 in eight innings in the opener and losing 4-2 in the nightcap. Rebekah Bauer (Stevens Point, WI) hit a two-run double to break a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning of the opener and spark and eight-run inning. Jill Van Wychen (Kaukauna, WI) added a two-run single and also had a hit in the second game to extend her hitting streak to 27 games, which is the ninth longest streak in NCAA Division III history. The Division III record is 33 games, which she could reach this week. In the second game, Bauer and Meagan Strmsek (Oak Creek, WI) both had run-scoring singles in the first inning, but UW-Oshkosh scored one run in the fifth and three in the sixth for the win. TRACK AND FIELD April 24-26 - at Drake Relays April 26 - Men at Loras Invitational April 26 - Women at UW-La Crosse Invitational http://www.uwsp.edu/athletics/track/ The Pointer men�s and women�s teams both placed third in the Augustana Invitational over the weekend in Rock Island, Ill. Noah Eschenbauch (Rosholt, WI) recorded an automatic qualifying mark for the NCAA Division III championships in the hammer throw with a heave of 194 feet, 11 inches to place second in the event. Scott Dreger (Cambria, WI) provisionally qualified in the decathlon with 6347 points and Matt Legel (Crystal Lake, IL) was a provisional qualifier in the 800-meter run with a second place time of 1:52.06. Cody Kronberg (Seymour, WI) had second place finishes in the long jump at 22 feet, seven inches and the high jump at six feet, six inches. Andy Schliepp (Redgranite, WI) was runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles in 56.20 seconds and the 110-meter hurdles in 15.15 seconds. Also, Jon Casey (Randolph, WI) was second in the javelin at 161 feet, nine inches and Jake Rhyner (Medford, WI) was second in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:45.00. On the women�s side, Jody Butkowski (Stevens Point, WI) won the triple jump in 36 feet, 0.75 inches and Teresa Stanley (Whitewater, WI) won the 5000-meter run in 18:34.61. Amanda Nechuta (Mosinee, WI) provisionally qualified for nationals in two events, placing second in the discus at 148 feet, 11 inches and third in the shot put at 42 feet, eight inches. Melissa Seefeldt (Cato, WI) had the women�s only other provisional mark despite finishing sixth in the hammer throw at 150 feet, five inches. Five other Pointer women finished second in their event, including Ashleigh Potuznik (Baraboo, WI) in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 11:53.5, Liz Goergen (Apple Valley, MN) in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:05.28, Jenna Mitchler (Kaukauna, WI) in the 800-meter run in 2:19.98, Kara Vosters (Little Chute, WI) in the 10,000-meter run at 38:06.28 and Nicole Pooley (Fennimore, WI) in the high jump at five feet, 1/2 inch.
