Players of the Week � Apr. 14

Baseball (Position Player) -

Ryan Jones (Eau Claire, WI/North) - The junior first baseman hit .543 (19-for-35) with 21 runs scored as the Pointers won all nine WIAC games this week. Jones crushed five home runs, including a pair in an 8-7 come-from-behind win over UW-Whitewater. He also hit a grand slam against UW-Superior. For the week, Jones totaled 17 RBIs, four doubles, two stolen bases, and had 79 chances in the field without committing an error.

Baseball (Pitcher) -

Jason DiGise (Monroe, WI/Monroe) - The sophomore right-hander fired his first career complete game shutout on Sunday against UW-Superior. DiGise allowed only three hits, struck out four and walked just one batter against the Yellowjackets. He also made strong appearances against UW-Whitewater and UW-Stout, pitching two innings without allowing a run against the Blue Devils. For the week, DiGise allowed two earned runs in 12 inning pitched for an ERA of 1.50 and 11 strikeouts.

Softball (Position Player) -

Jill Van Wychen (Kaukauna, WI/Freedom) - The senior centerfielder hit 14-for-24 (.583) and extended her hitting streak to 25 straight games. Van Wychen had a pair of triples and went four-for-four against UW-Whitewater. She also went four-for-four against UW-Stout on Saturday. For the week, Van Wychen added a pair of doubles, five runs scored and two stolen bases.

Softball (Pitcher) -

Karen Guckenberger (South Milwaukee, WI/South Milwaukee) - The senior pitcher fired a no-hitter and a two-hitter in winning both halves of a doubleheader against UW-Whitewater. She also fired a one-hitter against UW-Superior, and allowed only two hits in seven innings of relief against UW-River Falls at the WIAC Cluster Tournament. For the week, Guckenberger went 4-1 with a save and an ERA of 0.77. She fired three shutouts, struck out 26 hitters and allowed just four earned runs.

Men's Track Events -

Matt Legel (Crystal Lake, IL) - Legel placed fourth in the 800 meters at the Cardinal Classic at North Central College finishing in a time of 1:53.87. He also ran on the Pointers' winning 4 x 400 meters real team. That relay team took first place in 3:21.45.

Men's Field Events -

Noah Eschenbauch (Rosholt, WI/Rosholt) - Escenbauch won two events and achieved two qualifying standards at the Cardinal Classic in Naperville, Ill. Eschenbauch recorded an automatic qualifiying mark of 58.18 meters in winning the hammer throw by over six meters. He claimed the shot put with a toss of 15.17 meters, good enough to break the provisional qualifying standard. He also placed fifth in the discus.

Women's Track Events -

Liz Goergen (Apple Valley, MN/Eastview) - The sophomore placed first in the 100 hurdles at the Oshkosh Triangular and third in the same event at the Cardinal Classic in Naperville, Ill. She ran a time of 15.83 at Oshkosh on Wednesday and 15.72 at North Central College on Saturday. Goergen also participated on the first place 4 x 100 meter relay team and the second place 4 x 400 meter relay team.

Women's Field Events -

Amanda Nechuta (Mosinee, WI/Mosinee) - The sophomore placed second in the shot put at the Cardinal Classic with a throw of 13.15 meters, good enough for a provisional qualifier to the NCAA Championships. She also had a hammer throw of 46.71 at Oshkosh on Wednesday to provisionally qualify in that event. In the four throwing events at the Cardinal Classic, Nechuta placed second in the shot put, third in the javelin, fourth in the hammer and fifth in the discus.
