Five Pointers Named to NCHA Womens First Team, Idalski Coach of the Year

Northern Collegiate Hockey Association champion UW-Stevens Point landed five of the 12 players on the leagues first-team All-Conference squad, including sophomores Nicole Sankey and Diane Sawyer, who both earned their second career selections.

Freshman forwards Ann Ninnemann, Jackie Schmitt and Emily Teachout were also honored, and coach Brian Idalski was named the leagues Coach of the Year. Freshman forward Liz Goergen was an honorable mention performer.

The Pointers finished 26-1 this season and won the leagues regular season and tournament titles in just their second year as a varsity program.

Sankey, the teams captain, was one of the leaders of a defense that allowed just 35 goals in the Pointers 27 games this season. UW-Stevens Point also surrendered just 10 goals over its season-ending 15-game winning streak. The Stevens Point native also posted five goals and four assists.

Sawyer, a Stillwater, Minn. native, had an incredible mid-season run to finish the year with league-bests 1.11 goals against average and .939 save percentage. She also had five shutouts and a perfect 13-0 record. Sawyer went from Dec. 9 until Feb. 8 without allowing a single goal, spanning 294:59 consecutive minutes.

Ninnemann, a Rosemount, Minn. native, led the Pointers in scoring with 20 goals and 19 assists for 39 points. She scored points in 22 of the teams 27 games, including school-records four assists and five points in a win over St. Olaf.

Schmitt, a Buffalo Grove, Ill. native and Wheeling High School graduate, totaled 23 goals and 13 assists for 36 points. Schmitt led the nation with 10 game-winning goals, including a mid-season streak of game-winners in six straight victories. She scored six goals and seven points in a late-season sweep of UW-Eau Claire.

Teachout, an Edina, Minn. native, posted 17 goals and 16 assists for 33 points. She scored goals in each of the last seven regular season games, including the game-winning goals in both victories at UW-Superior that clinched the NCHA regular season title and earned her national offensive Player of the Week honors.

Goergen, an Apple Valley, Minn. native and Eastview High School graduate, had 15 goals and 19 assists for 34 points. She scored points in 13 of the first 14 games of the season.

Idalski is the second Pointer coach to earn the leagues Coach of the Year award in the two-year history of the league. Jason Lesteberg won the conferences inaugural award. Idalski piloted the squad to its successful season with a 19-player roster that featured 14 freshmen and five sophomores.

UW-Superiors Melanie Salatino was named the Player of the Year.
